Spring clamp hose pliers
I have aVW Cabriolet, Toyota Camery and a Isuzu Trooper, all of them have spring hose clamps as do most european cars. I had the oil cooler hose burst on the VW. After fighting with some chanel lock pliers I was able to remove the spring hose clamps. it only took four hours. It took half the time to replace them. After talking to the mechanic at work he said they make a tool for that and he bought his on a tool truck that comes to the shop. I looked on line for spring clamp pliers and found some in the range of $75.00 and up. I checked an online auction and found a pair they sold for $69.00. I went to the local Sears store and went to the auto specialty section and found a pair of craftsman for only $39.99. I hesitated a bit before buying them. It was the last set. I Bought them and the first thing I did when I got home was to try them out on the VW. The clamp slid right off in seconds. If I had had these a couple of weeks ago I could have saved hours not fighting the clamps using chanel lock pliers. A real must have. If you have any type of spring clamps on your vehicle you have to get this tool. It will get into places chanel locks wont and save hours of frustration

Great for hard to reach places, but couldn't remove most clamps
I used these spring clamp pliers to do a complete coolant hose replacement in an 89 Volkswagen. These pliers were indispensable to get at some hard to reach clamps and I would not have been able to complete the job without them. On the other hand, these pliers did not pinch most spring clamps enough to actually remove them over various fittings/nipples/junctions. I found myself using these cable operated pliers to spin hard to reach clamps into a position where I could get at them with a pair of Lisle spring clamp pliers (non-cable, and adjustable) which was kind of disappointing. I was hoping this cable operated plier would be the only hose clamp plier that I needed in my toolbox.

CRAFTSMAN Cable Operated Hose Clamp Pliers

After struggling for over an hour trying to loosen a clamp in a very difficult to reach location behind the engine, I gave up and went looking for these. Literally 2 mins and the clamp was off. This is an indispensable tool for hard to reach places, and it can grip a large variety of clamp sizes very well, and is definitely strong enough to handle some large radiator hose clamps. Must have product.

Must have for mechanics

These are great pliers - a required item if you work with hose clamps which are deep down in many newer vehicles, especially European ones. Once you try them you will realize how much they save your knuckles.

Works... but average quality

I used this tool a few times now... it works OK, however, it seems very flimsy... the quality of the tool is not that great. I've also noticed after a few days in my tool box, it started to rust very bad. I had to pray it down with WD-40. I don't recommend this to anyone.

Essential Tool

If you work on modern cars with factory hose clamps these are a necessity.Working in the tight confines of an engine bay you'll find yourself reaching for these often.Once you've used this type of tool you'll wonder how you made do without. This tool is made in Europe and the quality seems excellent. This tool is offered in a ratcheting variety by some other companies which is somewhat more versatile but tend to strip and slip over time. The simple mechanism on this unit locks securely with no issues.Good luck.

VERY unique

This is an extremely unique and useful tool. Its uses are limited, but when you need it, nothing else will do the job! Some clamps are located where no other plyer will fit.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great for intercooler pipes

Just the right tool for removing hard to reach factory style hose clamps on import cars. I bought these to get the intercooler pipe clamps off my volkswagen TDI.

Overall
worth every penny! but could be even better

I read reviews citing inadequate compression for maneuvering clamps over barbs, and I was a bit concerned upon seeing the stock pic showing a clamp not fully compressed (judging from the stop tabs) with the tool in locked position. Well, I got sick & tired of wasting time and beating my hands/arms up during a recent job (as a DIY mechanic) and couldn't wait a week to mail order a different brand, so I took a chance, as my local store had some in stock. I can testify that, not only did my new, made-in-France pliers fully compress the clamp tabs (i.e., open the clamp), the inner cable is a little TOO SHORT. This wasn't so much a problem with smaller clamps as it was with large, strong radiator hose clamps -- the clamp stop tabs met well before the lock position of this tool was reached, requiring excessive effort to make it lock. This is where a multi-position lock would come in handy. I worried that either the cable would break or the end cap(s) would fly off. Fortunately, neither occurred during a number of uses. Perhaps Sears took note of the "too long, needs washers" issue and went a tad overboard by shortening the cable too much on later units. A set screw end cap is supplied with these pliers which is intended for cable replacement -- the "needs washers" crowd should consider removing the original cap and using the set screw cap to solve their problem. The overall cable length is fine for reaching most any clamp. I easily removed my lower radiator clamp from above the bay. Note that you may have to use ordinary hand tools to initially pivot your clamps into a position that this tool will be able to latch onto them. I simply could not maneuver the business end (head) of these pliers onto one of my clamps w/o first swinging it around a bit. After that, however, subsequent placements and removals were a breeze. So, once you find a good position for this tool during clamp installation, let 'er go and next time you'll be set for a quick removal -- factory/existing orientation may not be helpful when using this tool. Suggested improvements: 1. Reduce grip spread (via ratcheting or w/e). It's rather difficult to use these pliers with one hand on the grips for clamps that have a wide tab spread. Often the user needs to hold the head of this tool in position with one hand while securing it in place via handles using the other hand. Sure, one can use the engine/bay as a brace, but this sometimes leads to the head slipping off the tabs when the user moves into a new position in order to grab the pliers with that other hand. 2. Easily rotatable head. I found it difficult to position on some clamps due to where my fingers had to be in order to slip the head over the tabs, while keeping my other hand at a necessary angle; it was a struggle trying to twist the head it into compliance. 3. Ratcheting, multi-position lock would be worth a few extra bucks. 4. A blow molded storage case would be worth a couple extra bucks.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Very Handy Tool

I purchased this for my fianc? as an Easter present. He had seen it on the Sears website and mentioned he wanted to get it. He is a full time mechanic and not even a week after I gave it to him he had to use it and he said without the tool it would have been next to near impossible to get where he needed to. He said just using the tool that one time paid for itself. He now wants to buy another one for use if he needs to work on a car at home.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
