Craftsman CanOBD2 reader did it's job...

I recently had my check engine light go off in my Ranger. Took it to a mechanic friend and his pro-grade car reader showed that my MAF was bad which explained my poor idling and loss of power. I went ahead and purchased the Craftsman CarReader so that I could view DTC codes on my own as soon as they occur for any of my vehicles and repair myself if its something I can handle. I plugged the tool in and sure enough, it showed the same code that my friend's tool showed. I went right away and purchased the MAF and reset the DTC. Ranger running good again and I'm able to see which I/M monitors are complete and which are still pending completion. This CarReader works great and the price is very easy on the wallet. It obviously lacks the big features of the professional OBD2 readers but it gives enough info for the backyard mechanic like myself. Only knock on this tool is that you have to go online and view/print the list of trouble codes to see the details of the code. I knew this before purchasing and it wasn't a problem for me since computers is my job but it might be an issue for those who are not computer savvy. Overall, VERY much worth the buy for your average DIY'er.

Works -- but weak software and hidden costs
Didn't expect a lot from this unit---just a basic code reader that 'works' as advertised. The reason I chose this unit over some less expensive models was the description of the included software. Although the unit only displays the codes, once it is plugged into your computer with the included software, it supposedly gives you a wealth of information explaining the code/s and related parts/service/costs associated with the necessary repair. Well, the unit worked perfectly and was simple---just plug it into your vehicle and up pops the code/s; but the software is irritating...and this tool is useless without it of course. The installed software basically does nothing without having to connect to the internet (a pain trying to use my laptop which was out of range of any available wifi connection); it won't give you a diagnosis without "registering"---and the registration process requires information such as your VIN, some personal information, and even your license plate number. I had to go back inside my house where I could get an internet connection, and then run back outside to my vehicle several times to get more information since it requires inputting info one page at a time instead of all in one form---annoying! And then, to top it all off, when I finally got through the registration and not-always-relevant bullet list of potential issues, it gives a basic description of the orginal code, and then asks if you want to buy a "full report" online for an additional $14.99 that presumably will give me the kind of information I bought this silly thing for in the first place (like 'part numbers and estimated repair costs'). Are you kidding me?

Excellent tool

I bought this item to read and reset the engine code on my 2007 Dodge Caliber. It did what I expected it to do and was very easy to use.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

OK scanner but watch out for software versions

If you buy this scanner check for the date on the software. The scanner itself is easy to use and works well. Unfortunately it's packaged with at least two versions of Innova software. The CD in the first one I got was dated 2009 and the program couldn't even see the scanner. I exchanged the scanner at the same store and the CD with the second one was dated 2011. It worked.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Among the flock

I agree with all the other people who have had difficulty with this unit and the difficulty is with the internet connection(that never happened) and having to buy the data we bought this unit to get(never got that far either). I emailed Repair Solutions and they told me to call to get connected. Why do I need to call them? If there's a problem that's known to them why do I have to take time out of my busy schedule to call the west coast? Obviously there's a problem and if they know the answer just let me know via an email. I'm about to trash this product and the company it links to on my consumer awarenesss blog as "great price, crap support" and "don't waste your cash"! Info it provides is a 9, support is a 0. Thank goodness Google is there to define the problems that RS wants additional cash for. Not a best buy.

Reader is Great, Program is useless!

I Just got this and hooked it up to my vehicle, the code came up immediately, which was great! The problems came when I installed the "Repair Solutions" program on my computer. That's as far as That went. Once installed, the program never loaded, never responded. Nothing. Thank God for Google, I just typed in the code and all is good. One other minor thing is the unit does not have a manual to explain the features of the device (only explains how to hook it up to your car) but there is nothing on how to erase codes, or what the lights indicate. My suggestion to Craftsman is to get a better program!

I would recommend this product to a friend.
