These are great pencils, really hold up well to rigorous use. Why will a regular "yellow" pencil not hold up as well. Just look at the amount of wood encasing the lead and you will see the difference. These pencils can absorb punishment that would cause standard pencils to fail. Plus, look at the lead. These pencils have a substantial column of graphite. The points will not break just by dropping the pencil. You will be able to put down a solid usable line on the work you are laying out or cutting. But a sharpener? I always use a pocket knife, the time-honored method of sharpening "carpenters pencils." But it is a nice idea. "Sacramento" Bruce Conklin

The Craftsman Carpenters Pencils and sharpener is a nice little tool to have. I had an elastic string that I tied a knot in and made a little necklace for my pencil sharpener, so that when I am working on a project, I don't have to spend my time looking to see where I laid my sharpener. The pencils are easy to hold and the lead is strong enought that it doesn't break while you are marking wood for your project. I keep a pencil in my shirt pocket or in my apron (that is if I am wearing my apron). Or I might just a well stick my pencil inthe side of my ball cap. If I need to sharpen up my point, then I just grab my pencil sharpener that's around my neck. The lead marks are dark so they are pretty easy to see. I also had a regualr number 2 pencil and just decided to give it a try and the pencil sharpener sharpened regular pencils, too. Two tools that would most likely be forgotten, but are definatly necessary, are the carpenters pencils and the pencil sharpener. All shops or yard DYIRs need a marking pencil at one time or another, so why not make them the Craftsman Carpenters pencils with sharpener. I would recommend these to be buddies.
