First, let me say I bought this to replace the 'nearly' exact same thing from Sears that I bought 17 years ago. That's how long the old one lasted before the engine gave out and would have been $700 to rebuild the engine. I was fairly pleased with the old one. This one is not as good. My biggest complaint, is they changed the design on how the back cover attaches and stays on - and it is not for the better. I have constant problems with the back cover coming dislodged when the bin is around 1/2 (or less) full. On the old version, the metal clips (for lack of a better word) that you swing down to hold the top cover on, were actual L shaped and clipped into the sides of the cart itself. why they would have changed that design is beyond me but it really is not nearly as good. The back cover also comes off too often where the rubber bungee cords connect. Second design change, and I think this is also partly to blame for back cover coming off - is on the old one, the top would tilt up - which was nice to use the cart just as a top load cart, BUT the reason I think it is also contributing to the back cover issue is on the old one, where the top of the cart met the top sides of the cart, were vents and so the air could escape there. with the new unit, all of the air must escape out the back and it is this force that pushes the cover off. The second issue I have is that the engine is not as adjustable as it needs to be as far as location - it just does not line up as well with the opening into the cart as it should. There seems to be less adjust ability on this one than the old one. Thirdly, this is MUCH harder to start/pull than the old one. and although an electric starter would help out of the garage, it would not help when you are out in the field dumping it with no electricity, so they really needed to do something to make it pull easier. Yes - putting it together does take ALOT of time, but I would not say it was difficult (as long as you are patient). but you will need a second person to help with the engine. I was missing one part (cotter pin for the hitch pin) - fortunately, I had my old one. the ONE good thing that this engine has that the old one didn't, is a fuel shut off valve - very helpful when storing. As far as the good things, I won't list them here because I pretty much agree with the good points the other reviewers have mentioned - it does work pretty well other than the issues I have. Over the years, on my last one, I did have to replace a few parts - the plastic chute (ended up cracking on the seam as well as where it bolts to the engine, as well as the plastic piece that attaches to the impeller (also started to crack) and the accordian boot that comes out of the cart and goes over the chute - ended up dry rotting - they were replaced somewhere around year 10. But mine gets used hard and when mowing with it I pick up alot of sticks and rocks and stuff I still recommend this.
I finally broke down and bought something to help with the massive leaf cleanup project in my yard. This thing exceeded my expectation. I had a little bit of a learning curve using it, but it does a great job.
Took 2 to 3 hours to assemble. I was missing 2 key parts. I called the company and they had them to me in 4 days. You need ear protection because the noise from your mower and it are loud. A little hard to empty, better to rake out leaves than tilt it to dump. An electric start would be a nice addition. A big motor to pull start. Overall it was a bargain compared to other brands.

First off, I gave this machine 4 stars .. the machine, if there were a way to rate Sears, then I would rate them -50 stars. They consistently find ways to be a horrible company. But back to the chipper\vac .. after looking at both this and the cyclone rake, the Craftsman won simply because of price. The Cyclone rake was WAY over priced and their optional attachments are even more over priced and then they have the nerve to charge $200 in shipping and handling to boot ! .. no thanks I ordered the Craftsman on October 11 from Sears.com. The website said it would take 7-14 days to deliver to the store for me to pick up .. it arrived on November 13th .. more than a month. I don't want to get sidetracked too much but I would like to take this opportunity to say that the people hired to chat with you on the Sears.com customer service Chat function .. are earth's stupidest people. Anyway, the machine arrived midweek and in about 1000 pieces (which I did know before I ordered). By the way, I imagine this is the reason this machine costs so much less than other similar products such as the Agrifab - you are saving $100's of dollars by assembling it yourself. The assembly instructions are decent and pretty straight-forward but definitely set aside a good 5-6 hours (or more) of your day to put this thing together. And that is if you have someone helping you .. which I highly recommend because it will be pretty tough tightening many of the bolts without an extra pair of hands (and the engine is heavy). Once put together, the very last step is to fit the boot to your mower deck. They ship you a solid shell of heavy duty hard plastic mower deck boot which YOU have to cut. They provide a template for many popular mowers .. you just have tape the template for your mower to the boot and trace it with some kind of heavy duty marker (I used a silver sharpie). Once traced, I used an angle grinder to slowly and very carefully cut out the section. You definitely need to take your time with this part, if you mess up, you will have to order a new one (which will probably take a couple months to get to you). The hoses that attach to the mower boot and the impeller on the chipper\vac are pretty decent and heavy duty but they are only held there with an 8" hose clamp (or maybe its a 6" .. I don't remember). This is not a good system, they constantly slip off .. which means you have to carry around a screw driver (or power drill) when you're riding the mower. The engine is very decently powered and creates an impressive vacuum. The leaves didn't stand a chance. This was my main concern over buying this unit over the Cyclone rake .. the top CR models have more powerful engines which I thought I needed .. I don't, and neither do you. Keep an eye on the bin capacity, when this fills up .. the hose clogs and clogs are time consuming to fix. Overall, this does make my leaf cleanup a lot easier and I recommend it. Got the chipper vac to get up leaves and it does this very well. I had no issues with the assembly, it was pretty straight forward and required no special tools. One thing I noticed when I started using the machine for the first time is the location of the chipper attachment sticks out several inches past the side of the machine and is easily caught on things if you're not careful. I actually decided to make a plate to block off the hole where it mounted so I could remove it when I didn't need to use it. I wanted the machine mainly to get up leaves and it does an excellent job of that so I'm fine with the chipper attachment removed and it's not a big deal to re-install it if I need to.
girlfriend has a three acre lot with tons of oak trees. Does a phenomenal job sucking them up very few clogs, and when it does clog its only a few seconds to clean
The Craftsman Chip N Vac is a serious piece of equipment that is great for handling leaves and clippings. I ordered online and had it delivered to a local store. it came in two boxes. Assembly was straightforward. The directions are easy to follow and there is a section that helps identify what nuts and bolts to use for each phase of the assembly. There are a lot of nuts and bolts. I have mediocre talent but was still able to assemble the Chip N Vac by myself. Everything aligned perfectly. You need to cut an opening into the shroud that fits over the mower discharge. A part of the directions includes a template for just about every mower made on the planet. You cut out the template and trace onto the shroud and cut to fit your mower. Mine fit first time. I was quite surprised that it fit so well. It really is quite sturdy. I have an L series ********** lawn tractor. The Briggs and Stratton Engine started quickly. It is a good engine for the vac and really has a lot of power. It is a bit of a tug to pull the cord but the impeller acts as a flywheel and basically makes starting the engine easier than you would expect. The trailer is large and the vac really packs it in. The system handled my walnuts and twigs without issue. I did jam the tube a couple of times as I got use to operating the vac but it was my fault. I kept overfilling the trailer and basically backed everything up. You have to kind of develop a sense for when the trailer needs to be dumped. My lawn tractor handles pulling the Chip N Vac well and I don't notice much difference towing it empty or filled. Dumping takes the most effort. After all, it is 32 cubic feet of shredded leaves and lawn clippings and just about everything else that gets in the mower's path. I use a small hand rake to help empty the load. Using the Craftsman Chip N Vac is much easier than raking and manually loading a trailer, cart or wheel barrow to haul leaves and clippings away. I'm guessing this all will make an excellent mulch as it decomposes. All in all I am very satisfied with my Craftsman Chip N Vac. I got a good deal and a bunch or Rewards. I've used it enough to know it was a good purchase and I would definitely recommend this Vac to a friend.
The Craftsman Chipper/Vac is a great tool, time and back saver. Believe it or not my wife love this thing. She gets it hooked up to the lawn tractor and off she goes. She starts, hooks up and empties the Chipper/Vac with ease. There is nothing sexier than coming home to you wife on the lawn mower. If you have leaves, pinestraw, pinecones, and/or sticks in your yard this thing what you need. One warning keep it of the gravel it does suck up a rock or two. However the job it does on the yard is great.
