My dad bought this set of Craftsman straight snips 25 years ago and he rarely used them. But after he gave it to me, I have used them a lot both outside in the yard, and in the shop. They have become quite rusty and the handle is mangled, but the blades still cut, even though I've worn out sections of the blade by using it to cut brake lines and other strong steel items. The compound action makes it easy to use, and it's very ergonomic. Check to make sure that it's "Made in the USA" before you buy it. My pair has it emblazoned on there, but they might have changed things since this was purchased.

This cutter works very well for straight cuts in sheet metal and can be horsed into doing curves as well. I have worked almost exclusively with sheet aluminum out to about 60 thousandths thick and these cutters work well on that thickness. Any thicker, or steel thicker than about 20 thousandths, and you need a beefier tool. I find my hands hurt after about 10 minutes of cutting especially thick material. Yes, these are the same as lower priced tools. I might add they are the same as more expensive versions also. This is a staple, a "commodity" tool. The main reason to buy Craftsman is the warranty, although I have never seen anyone manage to break a set of shears. It would be nice if Craftsman added some value to the tool with additional features. "Sacramento" Bruce Conklin

Normally I am a huge fan of anything marketed by Craftsman. These snips are an exception, however. Sure they work as intended, and I've never had any trouble from them, but when you buy Craftsman you just expect more. Maybe I am just spoiled by Craftsman's innovative designs, but these snips are almost exactly as the lesser brands. I know what you are thinking. They are tin snips, how innovative can they be - right? Well, if anybody can improve the generic tin snip, the Gods of All Things Tools can.
