I bought the mower another reviewer returned due to a gasoline leak. It was fixed by Sears. Good mower and works very well; I needed it because I have a very steep slope in my back yard. So, Sears does not offer a bagger. After much research I discovered this same mower, all made by MTD is also sold under the names of Cub Cadet and Troy Built. Get your grass catcher/bag from one of those sources. HD sells the Cub Cadet brand.
I purchased this mower and used it for 3 days on a commercial mowing contract. With in 5 minutes of use the drive belt slipped off. I had to put it back on 3 times in 15 minutes. I finally figured out what the problem was. The belt retainer post was drilled in the wrong spot and was too far away from the pulley. I bent the post towards the pulley about an 1/8th of an inch and had no further problems. I used the mower for 3 more days in super tall grass about 3 feet tall. Mower had plenty of power but laid down the grass a lot instead of cutting it. On the third day a bracket the holds the pulley belt in alignment with the pulleys bent and seized up the entire mower deck. This is not a commercial machine. I returned that mower and received a replacement mower. With the replacement I have had no issues. I think I just had a bad mower on the first one. All in all in normal grass it has tons of power and starts and runs great. It also cuts fairly well. Granted I was mowing in extremely tall grass but the bracket should not have bent on the first mower. I have not had any issues with the motor at all. I am still worried about the strength of the mower deck though.
I have had this mower for two years. I bought it to mow one lawn that's 1/2 acre. It cuts ok when the lawn is dry and not loaded with crab grass. The 12.5 motor doesn't have hardly any power at all. The reason I say this. If mowing any thick grass the motor doesn't even kick in to get more power. It just stalls out! These mowers with mulching blades are for the birds! If the lawn is wet and sounds like it's going to bog down and it will shut off, if lawn is too high. This mower makes all kinds of squeals and squeaks. I just had Sear Service come out to change drive belt, which I had to buy and supply to the service guy. It took him an hour to replace belt! I used the mower tonight and the belt fell once again. There is NO Adjustment on the belts! I put it back on and it fell off again! I know what I am doing. I had a lawn service for 30 years ! My father n law wanted me to buy Sears mower. I never owned a Sears mower ever! Now I know why! They are made like garbage! This mower is NOT even Close to a Commercial mower! I had an Ex-Mark mower with a Kawasaki 12.5 hp motor. That mower could mow a lawn that was 2 foot high and never stop!!! The only thing this mower had going for it is the Light. YOu can mow a lawn in pitch black and looks like day time outside! Also, to change the Oil is easy to change! I will miss being able to mow in the dark!

mower arrived we had to hook up the battery and blow up the tires put oil and fuel in and it started right up very solid machine excellent quality I gave it a 4 instead of 5 because of the handlegrips and the fact they sent it with no air in tires good machine for the money
Powerful, smooth, and fairly quiet engine are high points, but this mower just doesn't cut grass well. I wanted a powerful mulching mower, but this machine simply cuts the blades and leaves them behind full length. Cut quality was also poor. Instead of "lifting" blades and cutting, this mower "flattened" some of the lawn, and left many blades uncut, leaving a lousy, matted appearance compared to my 22" Toro. Don't be fooled by the style, this is far from a commercial quality mower. As others mentioned, the controls are difficult to operate, specifically the hand drive control. Requires an unergonomic position while engaging the system. The construction otherwise is a notch above a standard mower, but not commercial. Mine had a sloppy, loose electrical harness I had to secure, but otherwise it was good quality. Bottom line: This would be a decent choice if you have a large area you just want to cut and aren't too concerned about the finished product. However, if you have a thick, well manicured lawn, I think you will be disappointed with this machine. I returned mine for a refund and am back using my $300 Toro 22". It leaves a much nicer cut, is easier to maneuver, and uses much less fuel. For my yard, I honestly think the Craftsman 33 didn't even save time, since it's heavy and a bit clumsy to operate.

I have the older Red 2007 model but there all the same, all have the same frame and deck. The yellow one they make now is a little more like mine. The engine on this one is different then on the red and yellow on, otherwise same machine. Anyway this mower does not give a clean sharp cut the first time over the grass, the blades are new, balanced and timed proper. Anyone else notice this issue. I have to mow a lawn in gear 2 or 3 and then go over everything outleast once more in gear 4 because the mower missed blades of grass and areas. After cutting over the grass the second time it comes out great but that's a lot of extra time and effort. The drive belt falls off, the bagger is made of cheap fabric instead of metal, they should have made a slay so you don't have to walk. Overall i give it a 2 out of 5. I hope they resigned this machine better in the future. If your looking for a commercial mower I would not recommend this. MTD is the manufacturer and also makes the cub cadet version.
Purchased this mower and was off and running the next day. Took a little getting used to the turns but worked it out after a couple of uses. I now cut my lawn in now half the time I used to . Only draw back is it was not as high as my old mower, but a 3 1/2 in cut still looks very nice.
So far I have used it 3 times. I am very happy with everything so far. I went from a traditional size mower to this and it has made a big difference. Like the 4 forward speeds I use them all, 4th is mostly for the back yard with long runs. Have not changed the oil yet but will do so after about 5 hours then every 10. Plan on getting a small trickle charger for the winter for the battery. Mulching works well but not as fine a my past mower but no issues. took about 2 cuts to really get it down but now I really save a lot of time. I would say about half the time as my old mower. Engine feels strong and starts first time (key only). My Set time was about 15 minutes, delivered professionally by sears. It does use a good deal gas compared to a standard mower, however the engine is much larger (I would estimate about 1-1 ? gallons an hour).
Overall appears well built. Hose into carburator leaked on first mower, had to order a replacement. Can't exchange because I purchased online. Had to order new and return old. This is a sears issue. Mower turns easy and cuts, mulches great. Must have hand strength to opperate due to pistol grips. Can't release one hand to scratch nose or blades/drive will stop. I have hills and keeping it straight on the hill is difficult on the arms. Best choice though without spending 3500.
Unbelievable. That's the one word I can use to sum up my experience with this mower. Bought it yesterday, was super pumped to get it out this morning. Checked it out, all looks good, poured gas in the tank, got about a 1/2 gallon in and gasoline started pouring out of the area where he carburetor attached to the motor. Literally POURING out all over the mower the driveway - what a mess! Upon inspection both the gasket where the fuel line goes into the carb and especially where the carb attaches to the motor, are severely misaligned. There was even a green grease pencil mark by this where someone in the factory (probably in the motor factory in China) had marked that the gaskets where screwed up.....oh well....quality defect?? No problem! Ship it out anyway!! Shame on MTD (who makes this mower) and on Sears for having ZERO quality standards in place!! Do not buy this mower or if you do, understand you have little chance of using it past its warranty!!
