I can't begin to tell you how many times I needed to test a circuit in the basement I am remodeling just to try and figure out what the homeowner did! It got to the point where I needed to move from one branch to another quickly and my plug in unit was just too slow and didn't always help me find the power source I was seeking.
I went to Sears and poked around and ound this set. It was cheap ($15 on sale regular price is $25) and, while I didn't neccesarily need the multi-meter I couldn't pass on the deal!
The voltage detector is a simple device but it has saved me on a couple of occassions already in finding a power source I thought I had cut off before opening it up to fix it! The flashing light and loud beeping alert you quick before finding out the old fashioned way that you missed a breaker, a plus when it's a 220 VAC circuit!
The multi-meter is pretty basic although it does have a battery scale for 9v and 1.5v batteries so even the better half or kids can tell if a battery is worth keeping or recycling.
For the money you get a good dependable set of tools than can quite possibly save your life!
I purchased this today because my more expensive meter wont give the buzzing sound when detecting continuity, numbers read correctly but no beeping sound. So I went out and got this and with out even touching the leads the beep goes on and as I very gently even change the pressure by which I am holding the multimeter in my had the beep changes tone. That is a bad sign of the internals quality. On top of all that the unit feels light and cheap, I know that is not indicative of all things feeling that way, but in this case it should serve as a sign. I was going to take it back and replace it but after reading the other posts here, it turns out a lot of the units that are purchased have faulty continuity test. Now, I'm just gonna get my money back. I see some people paid as little as 10 dollars for this thing, here in California it was a whopping 25 dollars but I purchased it as it was on sale for 20. But anyways, taking it back tomorrow.

A basic multimeter and a good price if you can wait for it to go on sale.

Everything works good, the curcuit tester is a little sensitive, When your close to a nother wire its hard to tell which one is hot. If it were adjustable it would work better.

Meter works well and has easy to read LCD numbers, would have given 5 stars if the dial settings labels were larger. It has white on red in small lettering making it hard to read in low light conditions, Other than that its a good buy.

The tone that indicates continuity sounded like it was going to die. The battery cover is held in by a very short screw that only goes into plastic and I doubt it will last through very many battery change overs. The meter itself (black) is encased in a protective case (red) but the protective case protrudes 1/8th inch or so in front of the meter face along the bottom edge. This means the lead connectors, which are not in-line but right angle, will not seat flush with the meter face unless they stick out toward the sides of the meter. Furthermore if you continually attempt to seat them fully while they interfere with the case you subject them to a deflection which could eventually crack the lead connectors.
