Product Description
Increase security and privacy in your home by replacing interior and exterior doors without damaging the jamb or door frame with the Door Mortise Kit. By routing matching mortises for hinges, strike plates, and latch plates into the door and jamb, you won't have to tear a hole in the wall just to hang a better wooden door. Featuring an easy to use drop-in template design with a sturdy steel frame, this kit comes with everything you need for most hinges, strike plates, and latch plates on 1-3/4 inch and 1-3/8 inch doors and jambs. Gone are the days of chiseling* or setting stops and pegs to rout a mortise. Simply set the door thickness selector knob, attach to the door or jamb, drop in the plainly marked template for your door hardware, and rout! Includes a durable tungsten carbide tipped 1/2 inch router bit with ball bearing, eliminating the need for guide bushings. Also includes an Easy Measure Guide where weve done the math and made it simple for you to get standard industry placement of your door hardware. Centered tabs on each template ensure complete accuracy. This product is packaged in a clamshell that snaps shut to act as a hanging storage container for your templates when not in use. Simply cut off the package seal edge when opening for reuse. Includes the following templates: HINGE MORTISES (For square* AND rounded hinges): 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, and 4-1/2 inch hinges. STRIKE PLATE MORTISES: 1-1/8 x 2-3/4, 1-1/2 x 2-1/4, and 1-1/2 x 2-3/4 inch strike plates LATCH PLATE MORTISES: 1 x 2-1/4, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4, and 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch latch plates. *Some chiseling required on templates with square corners.

This kit of mortise and latch templates can be used on both the door and jamb sides (unlike some templates that only mount to doors). These cost effective templates along with a router will give you more consistent mortises, faster and easier than chiseling by hand. Only a few things to watch out for, and a few requested improvements: Make sure the plastic template is pushed down evenly in the metal frame to insure an even mortise depth. I prefer to screw down the frame rather than use nails (nails are hard to remove, IMHO) so I drilled out the mounting holes a bit to accommodate #6 screws. It would be great if the frame mounted to door edges with a clamp instead, but I guess that would cause a problem for use on the jambs. Also, the plastic knobs that set the door thickness can shift during use, so be careful to check before routing. The biggest complaint I have is with the centering features on the templates. Because they are on the outside edge of the template, they are hard to line up accurately with a hinge center mark on the door edge and not even that easy to use by pulling a tape measure from the door top. It would be very helpful if the center mark continued into the inside edge of the template (a small recessed groove molded into the plastic wouldn't effect guiding the router). For best results, practice on a scrap edge of 2x4 before risking a mistake on a real door.

Save your money, very poorly made difficult to setup. The poorly conceived plastic adjusters popped off. They are made of plastic and are held in with a metal set screw. I was attracted to the versatility of the templates but no template would fit my interior door strike plate. Unfortunately, I could not test because of the flaws in construction. A better option is the new Ryobi Door Hinge Template Model # A99HT1. It is very well designed, but again it is made of plastic and can only be used for door hinges.

They seem to get really close but lining them up to be exact is difficult.
