      Drill Guide
Clever jig. Very useful. I still own one of the original drill jigs from about 20 years ago manufactured by Portalign Tool Co. of San Diego, Calif. (a company now long gone). Even with a drill press, the number of times I have reached for this little guy is beyond count; it can perform operations that would be simply impractical or almost impossible on a drill press. The biggest difference from the original is that this one can drill holes at an angle and mount on a workbench with flat head wood screws. Nice improvements. And, if you occasionally want to edge sand using through 2 diameter sanding drums, the instructions show how to mount it under a 2-1/4 hole to do just that (see Craftsman 21 piece sanding drum kit #25262). The first thing I did when I unpacked it was to remove those pesky springs on the guide bars (they do serve a useful purpose, but not for me), remove the rubber pieces on the base (I prefer a flat machined surface), and spray it with a silicone product for smoother operation. My old Portalign still sits on one of my shelves, but I'm afraid its been replaced. Wonderful little jig, and Sears has the best price around for this little fellow.

      So_So
This came with one part missing (Thumbscrew). Tried to find one at Ace but they had none with metric threads. After an hour on phone with Sears I finally have one coming. There are 2 ridges on base where handle fits but the hole in base was off center so I had to taper handle to fit. Like "woodworker Lee" I had problems with carriage binding on slides. The slides have a depth stop on one side thereby compressing springs at different rate. Remedy = I cut a piece of 1/2" PVC 3/8" long for opposite side, or, just remove depth stop. Quality? Not so good but whadda expect from China! I really hate buying something new and then have to modify it to make it work!

      The answer to my problem

The assembly instructions do not match reality but its fairly easy to figure it out. Being a member of the Order of the Wandering Drill Bit I can envision vast improvement to my projects using the drill guide. Trying to get both legs aligned and locked at the same angle will require some thought. I'm guessing a framing square for setting it at 90-degrees would work and perhaps a piece of heavy cardboard or a small section of thin plywood could be used for setting it at an angle.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      Wobbly shaft and chuck

The sliding mechanism is good, the adjustability is good, the base is good, the handle is good, BUT the the shaft that the drill locks onto, and the chuck that holds the bit, both wobble, making the entire tool useless. I'm going to try and exchange it for another and see if I just happened to get a bad one.

      Craftsman drill guide

Does exactly what it's suppose to do. Definately designed for homeowner use and not proffessional use. My only complaints are that it's regular price is a little too high, $20 would be perfect, and the chuck is only 3/8ths instead of 1/2in and I wish the chuck key had some way of attaching to the guide. Since its not attached in any way I know I'm gonna loose it eventually. Craftsman Proffessional should make a version of this with a 1/2in chuck and get rid of all the plastic pieces and replace them with metal. I'd deffinately wouldnt mind paying around $30-$40 for that.

      Craftsman Drill Guide

I tried using this as a jig to drill holes for plugs on a floor. Frame was to flimsy drill was causing it to oscillate.

Great Tool if you don't have the need for a true drill press

The item works Perfectly as advertised! I mounted to one of my benches and ran it through all of the angles I would need to drill wood doll holes and had no problems at all!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Cross-beam broke after about 1/2 hour of use. Hopefully replacement from Sears lasts longer...
