Went to local Sears store to buy 16" model despite some negative reviews. Luckily they were out of stock except for display. Decided to purchase last of the 18" model for $25 more (slightly more HP). Was able to play with in store side by side, and there is an entirely different trigger mechanism on the 18". The 16" catches unless you depress the lock mechanism just right. Store clerk was surprised as well. 18" performed like a dream. Extra chain and warranty make this an easy choice. Figure at less than $100, I'll burn through the chains and then dispose at some point cheaper than trying to sharpen. Chain tensioner works great Yea! I didn't need another gas can sitting around my garage.
I've only been using it 2 days but it cut up two fairly thck (max 20") trees with almost no effort. Well designed. useful features, and at just under $100, a good bargain

I purchased this item to remove two 12 foot Mexican Palm Trees. These trees are very fibrous. I was able to cut both trees down to ground level. However, during the process...I went through both chains supplied (dulled them)... The saw tripped the circuit breaker twice... The chain jumped off the bar 3 or 4 times... The housing which encloses the chain tension adjustment mechanism, became clogged with debris and required disassembly and cleaning on several occasions... I also feel there are at least 2 design flaws in the unit... (1) The debris that got into the chain tension adjustment mechanism created enough heat (via friction with the chain) to partially melt the motor housing. This problem could be resolved with a metal guard surrounding the motor pulley shaft. (2) The motor is not free moving; so you cannot move the chain by hand. This creates a problem if you want to use a bar mounted sharpener. As a result sharpening a dull chain is difficult, if not impossible. I am not a novice chainsaw user. Before moving to Arizona we lived in Oregon and cut firewood several seasons with a Husqvarna 20" gas chainsaw. I sold that saw before moving. All of that said, having used both a gas and electric chainsaw, I prefer electric, assuming you have power available. It's much quieter. I need ear protection when using the gas one; and fuel won't go stale if you don't use the saw frequently. As far as recommending this product to a friend. It's OK for light duty use, limb removal etc. but you might not need an 18" for that task. For heavy-duty use, it might be OK as long as you keep the adjustment mechanism clean. Knowing what I know now, I would shop more before purchasing. But, I would purchase electric.
I give this 3 stars because it did a fine job, when it actually worked. Purchased this chain saw to help cut down some trees on my property. Got it home, added chain oil and started cutting. After about 20 minutes of cutting, I checked the bar oil level, the saw had not used one drop. Took the cover and bar off and the automatic oiling port was dry. Returned the saw and received a replacement. The saw did an excellent job of taking out several trees and cutting them up. Great power for it's size! Was cutting away and the saw stopped working. I thought the cord had come unplugged, double checked all connections and found that the switch had either gone out, or a wire had come loose, so back to sears. The store did not have any more in stock, so after much deliberation, I decided I would take the floor model (after all I had trees that needed cutting!). Got it home and after the first cut, smoke started pouring out of the motor. I am going to take it back again today and have them order a new one in. If this one fails, I think I will get my money back and go elsewhere to get a saw that is more reliable. The saw DID do an awesome job when it was cutting, the only problem was keeping it going. As of right now, I would NOT recommend this saw. I can understand one having some problems, but 3 of them?? And all different problems???? Maybe just a bad batch, we will see...
i had to put it in the trash, less than 6months. i ended up buying a remengton model that was electric just like this one it was 30$ cheaper and has worked 1000X better i will never buy this craftsman model ever again.

There were a few reviews complaining about the fact that the chain breaks easy and is hard to find... Maybe in their location but before buying, I looked for chains and had no trouble finding them. That is IF I needed one. I Havent.!! I cut our entire overgrown yard down including 3 Palm trees with at least 15" trunks that were about 10' tall.. Chopped the trunk into pieces too. That is a fibrous tree, I also took out thick nasty bushes, vines, you name it. I only threw the blade once and it was a bit of a moment to get the hang of puttiing it back on, now I don't think it would be an issue. The saw has so much power I never felt I should have gone gas. It has a huge oil tank so only now I am getting low after chopping everything. It is also well balanced and fairly light but not cheap feeling. You will have no disappointments with this saw unless maybe you are chopping a 30' monster of a tree and even then it could probably handle it.
