It does the job, as long as there's electricity, you'll be carving up wood
The only thing different than a conventional chain saw is that there's a cord attached; other than that, it's a well crafted machine designed for cutting wood. The built-in safety mechanisms make it hard to start cutting before you're ready, so there's almost zero learning curve. Almost zero kickback, though with the proper stance and recommended cutting angle provided in the quick-start instructions, no issues to report (and yes, you do need to buy the chain oil separate unfortunately, though it's manditory - fill up the reservior and you're good to go. From all the "Pro" comments given above, the only "Con" I have is: try to find an outlet that's free from having any other electrical devices on it, like other tools, or lights, etc. This thing uses "a lot" of juice, enough to blow a 15amp curcuit breaker under the right conditions. Also, we used 100' foot + 50' foot, 14 gauge extention cords to reach the tree, with no performance loss, no problems.

Buy it at your own risk
Well, this is my personal impression of the new CRAFTSMAN Electric Chain Saw, 15 Amp/4.0 HP Motor, Model 172.34120. I was able to cut through about 8 trees 18-in in diameter as easily as with my old gas Craftsman 18-in chain saw, with no problems whatsoever. That electric chain saw is very powerful and reliable, without the hassles encountered in any average gas chain saw, and it includes some special features worth having. My only objection is that once you go thru the two chains included by the manufacturer (it comes with one spare chain), then you?re done using the tool God knows for how long, because replacement chains are very difficult to come by. That?s due to the fact that the CRAFTSMAN people have not bothered to make them available to the general public as of yet. It seems to me that SEARS rushed to throw that new electric chain saw out into the market without checking on the availability of replacement parts for it. And in my opinion, a product, any kind of product, is only as good as the kind of support it gets from the manufacturer. As it stands right now, the new electric chain saw does not get any kind of meaningful support from SEARS. Consequently, as a result of that type of negligence, instead of five I can only give the new CRAFTSMAN Electric Chain Saw only TWO stars.

      warranty expired, then saw

I used this saw intermittently for 2 years with a 2 year warranty. Warranty just ran out and the motor burned up. Just doing some light trimming on a 65 degree day. Disappointed at the short life span of the tool given the use I got out of it.

      Great Buy

The craftman electric chainsaw is a good buy for your bucks. I use it for cutting small trees, then cutting them into fire wood. If you want a chain-saw that's easy to start and light weight this is the saw to get. The saw comes fully assembled and ready to use straight out of the box, it even comes with an extra chain. It has a lot of power and cuts fast, with minimum noise.

      Great saw

VERY powerful motor and easy to handle, the safety features are practical 7 do not get in the way of running the saw. I had a prior electric saw for years & while it was good, it did not have the power this larger motor has & that makes all the difference when the blade begins to dull slightly as saw will continue to function until I get a chance to change the blade. Overall a well engineered & "bullet-proof" saw! NICE!!

      Work as attended

I thought for a minute that I was going to have a bad review and return this chainsaw after the chain came off and trust me I read all the complaints. Well it happen to me and took me three times to get the chain on right, "the manual was not helpful." but if you follow the diagram on the chainsaw bar and line the teeth up as shown it will become a great saw once again. Some tools aren't for everybody !

      A great chainsaw.

Tightening the chain on this saw is a breeze with its "no tool required" tightening system. When using the old tightening method, I would let the chain get too loose before getting out the wrench, which is a safety issue. The saw is a good size and easily cuts large trees.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      Craftsman 18" 4.0 HP 15. AMP Motor

I had a gas chainsaw which I hated. People were always giving me wood when their trees blew down or were trimmed, I had a lot of wood! I had a terrible time with the gas trimmer so decided to go shopping. I went to a few places, but in desperation decided to go to Sears as they always have good products, They had an electric one although I was thinking of gas. I hesitated, but it was on sale, a Craftsman, had 4.0,HP, 15. AMP motor and Craftsman is good.. So I bought it. I LOVE IT. I'm out every day cutting wood, as even though we live in Southern California the nights are cool and we've had a little rain recently. I have no problem with it. - it's heavy and easy to use and cuts like a champ.

      Great chain saw

I got this because my 18 in gas saw broke down. I was cutting up about 3 cords of wood when it died. I finished the last two cords with this electric chain saw. I was cutting 36 in rounds on pine trees and 25 in walnut no problem This saw worked way better than my gas saw. never lugged down or threw a chain. The best part is never having to start it. Cut so good my friends are going to to get one. It out cut there gas saws. I was using a 3000 watt generator as my power. Worked this saw 2 days straight hard. Will use it next wood cutting season for sure.
