It does the job, as long as there's electricity, you'll be carving up wood
The only thing different than a conventional chain saw is that there's a cord attached; other than that, it's a well crafted machine designed for cutting wood. The built-in safety mechanisms make it hard to start cutting before you're ready, so there's almost zero learning curve. Almost zero kickback, though with the proper stance and recommended cutting angle provided in the quick-start instructions, no issues to report (and yes, you do need to buy the chain oil separate unfortunately, though it's manditory - fill up the reservior and you're good to go. From all the "Pro" comments given above, the only "Con" I have is: try to find an outlet that's free from having any other electrical devices on it, like other tools, or lights, etc. This thing uses "a lot" of juice, enough to blow a 15amp curcuit breaker under the right conditions. Also, we used 100' foot + 50' foot, 14 gauge extention cords to reach the tree, with no performance loss, no problems.

Buy it at your own risk
Well, this is my personal impression of the new CRAFTSMAN Electric Chain Saw, 15 Amp/4.0 HP Motor, Model 172.34120. I was able to cut through about 8 trees 18-in in diameter as easily as with my old gas Craftsman 18-in chain saw, with no problems whatsoever. That electric chain saw is very powerful and reliable, without the hassles encountered in any average gas chain saw, and it includes some special features worth having. My only objection is that once you go thru the two chains included by the manufacturer (it comes with one spare chain), then you?re done using the tool God knows for how long, because replacement chains are very difficult to come by. That?s due to the fact that the CRAFTSMAN people have not bothered to make them available to the general public as of yet. It seems to me that SEARS rushed to throw that new electric chain saw out into the market without checking on the availability of replacement parts for it. And in my opinion, a product, any kind of product, is only as good as the kind of support it gets from the manufacturer. As it stands right now, the new electric chain saw does not get any kind of meaningful support from SEARS. Consequently, as a result of that type of negligence, instead of five I can only give the new CRAFTSMAN Electric Chain Saw only TWO stars.

Great Chain Saw

I bought this saw to replace a McCullock electric chain saw that really didn't live up to my expectations. This saw is extremely powerful and simple to use. You can tension and even change the chain simply in minutes. I have been running chain saws since the early 70's and this is definitely the best electric saw I have come accross, plus it has a craftsman warranty - what more can you want. Also great value.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

No Regrets!

I have used gas saws all my life. I know what it takes to use them and I know what to expect. I did want more convenience with a saw in terms of use. I never used electric saws before, but decided to give it a shot with this product. This saw is now my "go-to-saw" when cutting down tress and trimming branches. It is very powerful and provides a smooth cut. There is no vibration when cutting - in others words, using it will not leave you sore. Even a friend who used it really enjoyed it and they only used gas saws as well. I do no regret buying this at all.

Chainsaw

It is a nice chainsaw, and the extra chain was a great bonus. Mine was sent opened, and the bottle of chain and bar oil was missing. But the saw had not been used.

My first full size electric chainsaw

I have previously used an electric pole saw that you can remove the small saw from the pole, but this was my first experience with a full size electric chainsaw. I used it to cut trees on my hunting property, mostly Juniper trees (often referred to as mountain cedar) but also some oak. I thought that the saw performed well. The biggest cut I made was probably about six or seven inches in diameter and had no problem with it. I liked the fact that it was lighter than my gas powered saws. I ran the saw using my generator with a one hundred foot extension cord and that presented no problems either. I cut brush for quite some time and the chain stayed tight and the saw did not use excessive bar and chain oil. I felt that the saw had satisfactory power and was pleased overall with the performance.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

4.0 Electric Chainsaw 18"

This saw cuts very well. I have the craftsmen 18" gas chainsaw and this one cuts just as good. I like that I no longer have to mix the fuel. I was surprised how much more quieter it ran compared to my gas chainsaw.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

refurbished no good

this item was discounted greatly and was too good to be true. I was told when I purchased this item kit was refurbished. well refurbished means to me that it is used but gone through and made to be like new. i asked about warranty and was told it had one, but then I purchased an additional 3 year warranty for 15 dollars more. When my husband opened the box and removed this item, it was very dirty and had wood chips all over it and on top of being very dirty, it didn't even work. Not only was it NOT refurbished, but it didm;t even work. I returned it to the store where they gave me a full refund.

Electric Chain Saw

Powerful with cutting teeth every second chain link. Weight is manageable, no more than any 18" chain saw.

Overall
There is a difference between 16 and 18" models!

Went to local Sears store to buy 16" model despite some negative reviews. Luckily they were out of stock except for display. Decided to purchase last of the 18" model for $25 more (slightly more HP). Was able to play with in store side by side, and there is an entirely different trigger mechanism on the 18". The 16" catches unless you depress the lock mechanism just right. Store clerk was surprised as well. 18" performed like a dream. Extra chain and warranty make this an easy choice. Figure at less than $100, I'll burn through the chains and then dispose at some point cheaper than trying to sharpen. Chain tensioner works great Yea! I didn't need another gas can sitting around my garage.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
