It does the job, as long as there's electricity, you'll be carving up wood
The only thing different than a conventional chain saw is that there's a cord attached; other than that, it's a well crafted machine designed for cutting wood. The built-in safety mechanisms make it hard to start cutting before you're ready, so there's almost zero learning curve. Almost zero kickback, though with the proper stance and recommended cutting angle provided in the quick-start instructions, no issues to report (and yes, you do need to buy the chain oil separate unfortunately, though it's manditory - fill up the reservior and you're good to go. From all the "Pro" comments given above, the only "Con" I have is: try to find an outlet that's free from having any other electrical devices on it, like other tools, or lights, etc. This thing uses "a lot" of juice, enough to blow a 15amp curcuit breaker under the right conditions. Also, we used 100' foot + 50' foot, 14 gauge extention cords to reach the tree, with no performance loss, no problems.

Buy it at your own risk
Well, this is my personal impression of the new CRAFTSMAN Electric Chain Saw, 15 Amp/4.0 HP Motor, Model 172.34120. I was able to cut through about 8 trees 18-in in diameter as easily as with my old gas Craftsman 18-in chain saw, with no problems whatsoever. That electric chain saw is very powerful and reliable, without the hassles encountered in any average gas chain saw, and it includes some special features worth having. My only objection is that once you go thru the two chains included by the manufacturer (it comes with one spare chain), then you?re done using the tool God knows for how long, because replacement chains are very difficult to come by. That?s due to the fact that the CRAFTSMAN people have not bothered to make them available to the general public as of yet. It seems to me that SEARS rushed to throw that new electric chain saw out into the market without checking on the availability of replacement parts for it. And in my opinion, a product, any kind of product, is only as good as the kind of support it gets from the manufacturer. As it stands right now, the new electric chain saw does not get any kind of meaningful support from SEARS. Consequently, as a result of that type of negligence, instead of five I can only give the new CRAFTSMAN Electric Chain Saw only TWO stars.

Overall
OK product for light duty use.

I purchased this item to remove two 12 foot Mexican Palm Trees. These trees are very fibrous. I was able to cut both trees down to ground level. However, during the process...I went through both chains supplied (dulled them)... The saw tripped the circuit breaker twice... The chain jumped off the bar 3 or 4 times... The housing which encloses the chain tension adjustment mechanism, became clogged with debris and required disassembly and cleaning on several occasions... I also feel there are at least 2 design flaws in the unit... (1) The debris that got into the chain tension adjustment mechanism created enough heat (via friction with the chain) to partially melt the motor housing. This problem could be resolved with a metal guard surrounding the motor pulley shaft. (2) The motor is not free moving; so you cannot move the chain by hand. This creates a problem if you want to use a bar mounted sharpener. As a result sharpening a dull chain is difficult, if not impossible. I am not a novice chainsaw user. Before moving to Arizona we lived in Oregon and cut firewood several seasons with a Husqvarna 20" gas chainsaw. I sold that saw before moving. All of that said, having used both a gas and electric chainsaw, I prefer electric, assuming you have power available. It's much quieter. I need ear protection when using the gas one; and fuel won't go stale if you don't use the saw frequently. As far as recommending this product to a friend. It's OK for light duty use, limb removal etc. but you might not need an 18" for that task. For heavy-duty use, it might be OK as long as you keep the adjustment mechanism clean. Knowing what I know now, I would shop more before purchasing. But, I would purchase electric.

Works great.... When it works!

I give this 3 stars because it did a fine job, when it actually worked. Purchased this chain saw to help cut down some trees on my property. Got it home, added chain oil and started cutting. After about 20 minutes of cutting, I checked the bar oil level, the saw had not used one drop. Took the cover and bar off and the automatic oiling port was dry. Returned the saw and received a replacement. The saw did an excellent job of taking out several trees and cutting them up. Great power for it's size! Was cutting away and the saw stopped working. I thought the cord had come unplugged, double checked all connections and found that the switch had either gone out, or a wire had come loose, so back to sears. The store did not have any more in stock, so after much deliberation, I decided I would take the floor model (after all I had trees that needed cutting!). Got it home and after the first cut, smoke started pouring out of the motor. I am going to take it back again today and have them order a new one in. If this one fails, I think I will get my money back and go elsewhere to get a saw that is more reliable. The saw DID do an awesome job when it was cutting, the only problem was keeping it going. As of right now, I would NOT recommend this saw. I can understand one having some problems, but 3 of them?? And all different problems???? Maybe just a bad batch, we will see...

Greaat Chainsaw

There were a few reviews complaining about the fact that the chain breaks easy and is hard to find... Maybe in their location but before buying, I looked for chains and had no trouble finding them. That is IF I needed one. I Havent.!! I cut our entire overgrown yard down including 3 Palm trees with at least 15" trunks that were about 10' tall.. Chopped the trunk into pieces too. That is a fibrous tree, I also took out thick nasty bushes, vines, you name it. I only threw the blade once and it was a bit of a moment to get the hang of puttiing it back on, now I don't think it would be an issue. The saw has so much power I never felt I should have gone gas. It has a huge oil tank so only now I am getting low after chopping everything. It is also well balanced and fairly light but not cheap feeling. You will have no disappointments with this saw unless maybe you are chopping a 30' monster of a tree and even then it could probably handle it.

Craftsman Chainsaw

Used this product right out of the box. No problems, plenty of power in a convenient package. Craftsman quality for a great price. The 4.0hp electric motor provides plenty of power for minor backyard jobs.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Don't buy!

The chain came off and is ridiculously difficult (if not impossible) to get back on. We verified this with others who had also purchased this model.
