Finally a DIY Dethatcher that works
From reading all of the reviews I feel I am one of the "lucky" ones with this dethatcher. I've been eying this since last fall and could not pull the trigger until I saw it on sale with free shipping for $129.00 plus $19 for a 3 yr. warranty (about 4 weeks ago). I received it within 5 business days. Assembly was fairly easy...took about 30 minutes by myself and reading the instructions. OK....time for the trial. I cut my lawn VERY short and began. IT WORKS LIKE A CHAMP. I really and I mean really put this to the test. Hey, I have the 3 yr. extended warranty and I could also take it back. I mean I went fast, slow, up a hill, down a hill. Did I clear twigs before hand? NO! I hit acorns, twigs, and almost a mole! I wanted to see how much this bad boy could withstand with my 7,500 sq. ft yard. No smoking, no belt slip, no broken tines. NO PROBLEMS. Cleaning was a little messy as the thatch really stuck to the bottom of the plastic. A landscaper was working on my neighbors yard and commented what a great tool. I smiled and said YES IT IS. As for the bag.......what do you expect? I dethatched 6- 30 gallon yard waste bags and did not plan on using the bag. Use the mower with the attached bag. BTW, I have tall fescue/BG mix. IMHO...GO FOR IT. You'll love it. Only question is durability as I will only use in the spring and fall so it should last enough for it to pay for itself if I had a professional do it. Happy in St. Louis, MO!

Electric Dethacher- Just OK
In the past, I've rented a Bluebird power rake to spring clean the lawn. It became a hassle transporting a 130 lb unit every year, so it seemed reasonable to invest in a Craftsman Electric Dethatcher. The price was right at $179 as opposed to a engine type which will cost in excess of $600. First, don't expect the raking results to be similar to a engine power unit. I had to set the electric dethatcher at the lowest level setting (the level where you get maximum raking contact with the ground). Even at this setting, the results were fair at best. The unit construction is mostly plastic which makes it extremely light and easy to maneuver. However, the plastic spiral rotor assembly with the raking wires look flimsy and perform mediocre at best while raking the lawn. Craftsman engineers could have made this part of the unit more rugged. I would have gladly paid a few extra bucks for a steel assembly with stronger and larger wire rakes. Make sure to walk the unit slowly, otherwise you will get less dethatching results on the lawn. I will certainly use the unit again. Its far from being a waste. I would suspect that its only going to last a few years because of its flimsy construction. Hopefully, Craftsman will redesign a newer more improved, rugged model by then.

Dethatcher

This electric dethatcher was an excellent buy, and with the extra I got off from buying online it was more than worth the price. It was delivered and a part was broken, took it back the store and they replaced it in less than a week. It works beautifully and I would buy again at Sears where I've been shopping since 1975!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

This thing is great!

I wish I would have had one last year and maybe my grass wouldn't be looking as bad as it is now. This thing pulled up all of the dead grass very easily and made raking it up a breeze. I had so much that I had to go over it again after raking up the first pile. I didn't break anything, probably because I bought the two year extended warranty. :D Buy this now. So much easier then trying to rake it manually.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Exceeded expectations

Picked up this Dethatcher even after reading through the negative reviews. I have had it for a little over a week and so far, it has performed great. Took some care to pick up sticks prior to doing the yard, but this worked so much better than trying to do it by hand. I did purchase the 3-year warranty just in case, since it is mostly plastic. The $60 to rent one at the rental center really made this purchase ($129 + $20 for warranty) an easy decision. It is light and as long as you plan your path, the cord stays out of the way. I did do my yard mid morning and the few patches still in the shade caused a little issue with the discharge getting clogged. If this lasts 3 years, then I will be happy and it will be worth the expense. The machine is pretty quiet and be prepared to find a place for all the thatch.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Electric Dethatcher

This tool seems to do what it is supposed to do. It pulled up a lot of grass. It did not pull up all of the leaves down deep stuck in the ground as I had hoped. Best used on a short cut lawn I think. Best used on a small lawn. One will get tired of it pretty quickly on a large area.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

This thing is a toy

First one I purchased motor burnt out, Sears replaced it. 2nd one two of the five tine holders broke off, they are just cheap plastic, the three others are loose on the main shaft and will likely follow the other two. The parts cost to replace the tine holders and 16 missing tines is $104 not including shipping. I gues I'll just chuck it out.

Smokin!

Purchased this a few years ago and have used once each spring. Cleaned grass from unit after each use and used heavy gauge extension cord. Over the years, have replaced power switch. A few minutes after turning on this spring, unit made squealing sound and lots of smoke came from motor. Motor was fried. Sears really needs to improve their quality. Replacement motor is about as much as a new unit and it will fail again anyway.

Waste of money

This product isn't worth the time or money. The instructions are very unclear how to assemble. The product isn't powerful enough to do any good on any detatching of a lawn. Totally worthless. Better to rent a gas power rake if you need to get the job done.

Don't bother. Look for something sturdier

While it did do a really good job picking up the thatch it broke after less than 2 hours of use. I heard a thunk and found a tine lying on the ground. While looking for where it fell off I noticed the housing was broken and would need repair. This would be a good product if built sturdier but as is, give it a pass. I gave it 1 star becasue when it was working it worked great.

Craftsman Electric Dethatcher

Bought it 5/3/2008, used 3 or 4 times now the motor is smoking. If I buy another dethatcher it will be a gas one and heavy duty. Usually buy craftsman products but might need to reconsider that.
