As a replacement
The good news is that if you have a decade-old 1/2 HP Craftsman door opener that's finally failed, this is the one to get. Sears got it right with this one; it's the same basic unit, meaning that all the mounting holes are exactly in the same place. This means you can easily replace the unit and still use the original track, chain, photoelectric safety devices, and even the upgraded (hardwired) command console. Because this unit uses enhanced security on the remotes, older remotes may not work. Sears should consider offering just the unit without the track and hardware, because you'll have a lot of parts left over.

plain and simple
This is a simple garage door opener. No bells or whistles but in my opinion, less to break down. I just want the thing to open the door, not make my breakfast. I had the help of a few teenage boys for the heavy lifting but other than that, this was a simple process. Overall, it took about 6 hours to take down the old one and install this one with very little modification from a 20 year old model. This is a very basic model and it does its job, I did buy another remote because I like to have 2 but at $99, I would not complain. As for noise, it sounds like the old one to me but my garage is detached so it doesn't matter to me.

Get's It Done

I bought two of these garage door openers when both of the prior openers died within two weeks of each other. I had to rehang the openers since the previous hangers were on a longer lift track; took a longer amount of time, but was worth it in the end. Very happy with the performance of both openers, but be sure to check the chain and tighten after 2 - 4 weeks, as indicated in the instructions. I was able to set codes so one remote would open one or the other depending on buttons I self-assigned. Sweet! Also able to assign a different code to work with an external key pad. No maintenance other than adjusting chains during first year of operation.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener 1/2 hp

This product is overall a very good product. The chaim driven portion tends to rust in damp climates, talk southern basements. The plastic gears shear off rather easily after a couple of years use as the plastic becomes brital. Over all this product could use a redesign on the lighting and drive gear. It is not easliable compatabile with the other remotes and normally must be reset if the power is off for a long time.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Easly Installation

Had to replace 10 year old unit with new one. The plastic gears worn down to nothing, of course the motor is the only ting warranted for ten years. Thought I could just change to drive but rails have changed. Installation was easy just hop I get more than 10 year out of this one.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Most Popular opener in the World. It can't be wrong.

Craftsman 1/2 HP chain driver opener is a great opener if you don't mind a little bit of noise. Since it is manufactured by Chamberlain (The worlds #1 selling opener) replacement parts are readily available for the do it your selfer. These openers will last 15 plus years when PROPERLY installed and when your DOOR IS PROPERLY BALANCED. Lets remember all these openers do is take our place in the lifting the door. When the door is hard for us to lift, it is hard for the opener to lift as well. Keep in mind that it has mechanical moving parts that over time wear down. No different than the tires on your car, the plastic drive gear is going to wear down. Usually around the 8-10 year mark if you door is properly taken care off. These openers installed RIGHT cannot be beat on price and quality.

Door opener had short lifespan 2 1/2 yr s. Good while it lasted.

The system worked great for about 2 1/2 years. This fall when the temperatures began to approach freezing, the close function acts like there is something blocking the door. The open function works fine. I lubricate my door regularly and it opens and closes easily (Manually) when it is disconnected from the opener trolley. The close tension setting is at max. I've tried several settings from min to max and all act the same. As the day warms, it works fine. I took the cover off, cleaned and relubricated the gear with a good quality silicone grease. No change. Cold morning temps cause it to fail. I've had difficulty finding online service advice.

Craftsman Model 53920 was not available at store pickup.

I ordered #53920 on line for store pickup.Next day E-Mail from Sears stated ready for pickup at my selected Sears location. The model I ordered (53920) was not available so they gave me Model 53985 instead. This model was installed with no problems and has more safety features then 53920.However I have Model 53920 that was installed on my other door about ten years ago and still kikin. Very happy with both. Thanks Sears.

Sprocket shaft broke under sproket

˝ HP Craftsman garage door opener. Sprocket shaft broke under sprocket. When that happens the door can slam. In my case it did not brake till it was almost closed. Purchased some time in 2000. Unit has worked good for 11 years. Could be dangerous if it falls on some one when it brakes. Is this a common problem? Does this opener have any recalls? Should I call the CPSC? Easy to install, good instructions, works first time.

Easy to install, good tips on installation.  Works well on a metal sectional garage door.  This is the third Craftsman operator I've installed and they all work first time.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
