Soft Metals Present a Special Challenge...

One of the most under-utilized power tools in the shop is the rotary tool. This little tool is amazingly versitile, but it requires a large arsonal of bits, points and tips if you want to tackle a variety of jobs.

A very common use for this tool and all of its accessories is to grind. I use mine to grind down areas on the old tools that I restore. The different shapes and sizes of tips and points available make it easy to work contoured areas that a bench or angle grinder can't reach.

Soft metals such as brass or aluminum provide a special challenge. Aggressive grinding is sure to damage the surface of the work-piece. I always use Silica Oxide Grinding stones when I'm working on a brass, aluminum or copper. The are safer to use than Aluminum Oxide counter-parts.

Take a look at the vintage 1950's mini-blowtorch I've been working on. It's almost done!
