My first impression out of the box - looks great, solid, easy to assemble with basic wrenches, has 2 manuals - for the engine and for the operation of the chipper (with complete parts # break down). Assembly was quick and fairly easy. Insert bolts in holes (all lined up perfectly) and tighten. Add gas and provided oil - I used a funnel with some half inch tubing to make this (adding the oil) easier. Just fill up to the edge of the fill plug and you are good. I have used this chipper for about 7 months now. I have many citrus, avocado, oak and pepper trees on my property and am very impressed with how this machine chews them all up. Feed a 2-3 inch branch into the chipper chute and it pulls it in and spits it out like nothing. I was very impressed with the power and ease it demonstrates when feeding the bigger diameter stuff through it. The smaller more tedious stuff like oak and citrus take a little longer to feed through due to them being more "bushy/branchy". I found it easier to just toss the smaller stuff into the leaf feeder. I took a 12 foot tall pepper tree to the ground in about an hour and a half. The long straight branches went through so easy I couldn't believe it. Typically I use about a little more than tank a day - when using it ALL day with heavy chipping. I do use the bag for catching the mulch which works great. Mulch is very fine and one full bag will cover about a 2-3 foot span around a tree. The pull start is not a quick easy "lawn mower" pull. Choke it and one steady strong pull is all I have needed to get it going. Fairly easy to wheel around. I pull it right up to the trees I am working on which makes it so convenient. The only MAJOR negative experience with this purchase was dealing with the Sears 1-800 customer service. I started calling them after the estimated date of arrival came and went with no chipper (if chipper is not currently in stock & you need it ASAP - don't bother ordering!!) . Even after multiple calls I was never given an answer of when I was going to receive the chipper. After a month and a half it finally arrived at my local store for pick up. I did find more help & answers from my local store than the 1-800 customer service - just FYI. But overall I was very disappointed with Sears poor customer service. GREAT product though.
**UPDATE** I have now used this chipper for about a year now and it is still chipping and running strong. Starts up on 1st pull 99% of the time. Still very happy with this unit. Going to mount on a small trailer frame so it can be hooked to my garden tractor and towed around the property quickly and easily. One suggestion is always turn the fuel switch off and run it dry after each use so the fuel doesn't sit and gum up in the carb when stored for short or long periods.
I found this at a reasonable price so I thought I would try it as I was looking for a chipper to clean branches from our 4 acre property. It took about 40 mins to assemble. I have just finished about 2 hours of work with it and so far has held up nicely. The only complaint is that it is listed as a 14.5 HP engine but it in fact is closer to 10HP. It does however have 14.5 ft/lbs of torque. I did not notice the engine struggling when I was chipping 2-2 1/2" inch branches. I have a few tips. When feeding smaller prices into the leaf hopper you need to make sure it is moving through as you are feeding it in as it will clog. When assembling, I noticed the location of the oil fill and I skipped ahead and filled the oil as it would have probably required the use of a tube to access the filler after the chute is installed. Oh, and it is loud, use hearing protection.

UPDATE 12/2013 - I wasn't able to edit my first review so created a new one. I have owned & used this unit extensively now for nearly THREE years now. Nothing has broken or been replaced (except oil & air filter). What amazes me how easy & quick it starts up even after a few weeks of not being used. I always turn off the fuel & run the carb dry when done & use a gas stabilizer. I agree you have to feed fairly straight branches through it. With use I learned to cut the branches in such a way that I don't run into this problem very often. I don't put palm fronds through it due to their fibrous nature. My biggest issue is the smaller bushy / branchy material that gets bottle necked in the chute. I just cut them up & throw it into the leaf chute. MTD makes this chipper for Craftsman & offers a Tow Bar Kit (Model # 290-010-000) so you can tow this unit behind your garden tractor. Expen$ive but it has made things faster and easier for me. Sears needs to include this with the chipper.
I bought this chipper from the sears outlet and took the unit home and immediately began chipping palm fronds, (both dry and green). A review earlier from Florida warned about problems but I only discovered that review after my own problems. The chipper must have jammed up or caught onto the the dried palm and the engine let go. There was an audible sound of internal engine failure like a damaged flywheel or thrown metal and the engine no longer had compression or was turning with aid from the motor. It just was spinning slower and slower until it stopped. After that, it would not start no matter what I tried. It was like the engine sheared. The exchange for a new chipper went without a hitch although the service staff seemed at a loss as to how this could have happened. On the second Unit, I got farther, about an hours worth of work before the exact same thing happened after I had already chipped some other dried palm fronds. Same horrible engine sound, same winding down of engine, same no start. I have since found other customers complaining that there have been engine problems, flywheel issues, interal damage, flying metal ect. but nothing exactly like my situation. Now a word on customers service- via phone: In a word....., Terrible. 1st call got hung up. Second call was with a hard to understand service rep, probably 1st month or three on job and very in over their head. I was advised to call crafstman directly. (this after being told to call the service number to schedule a tech to work on the machine). I explained this to the lady and she then could not find the account (event with help of a reciept purchase number-their number by the way- ) and still no help, 3rd person could not help either and said to try again later. Now, i'm pretty forgiving if things are going the wrong way or people have a bad day, but this was a concerted effort of ineptitude. It's one thing to have a bad machine...a fluke if you will, but 2 bad machines in 72 hours followed up with a disasterous customer phone service to top it all off as well as computer glitches of not being able to find customer information? This sounds like Obama Care not Sears (formerly Sear and Robuck). Returned everything, got my money back, and went looking for chippers from somewhere else.

This is the third copy of this shredder that I've owned over the last 25 years. My last one's Tecumseh engine died. I would have rebuilt or replaced the engine but the mfgr is out of business and the parts or motor were not available anymore. I purchased this unit as a replacement with the hopes that Briggs & Stratton motor will hold up better than the Tecumseh. My only serious gripe about this unit is the main hopper which in my opinion is the worst design I have experienced. I don't know what the design engineers had in mind when they came up with the plan for this hopper, but they should be forced to run this shredder with damp leaves for a week without a push stick. The good thing about my situation is that I still had my old shredder and the bolt pattern on the hopper matched the one on the new unit, so I put it on in place of the plastic piece of junk. Now my new shredder works like a dream, giving me a fine ground, compost quality mulch.
I've had one of these for three years now. It works well but is poorly designed for maintenance. My suggestions: 1.) If you are done for the day it shut off the fuel valve and let the carburetor run dry - it makes it a lot easier to start the next time around. 2.) If you are chipping fresh cut branches or vines what usually happens is the bark gets wrapped around the impellor in long strips and wedges between the impellor and the casing. This causes the machine to stall out. It also makes it next to impossible to restart and is the cause of all the complaints about the heavy pull to start it. If the pull is heavy I pull the chute off and remove the debris between the impellor and the housing with a pair of 12 inch needle nose pliers with a curved tip - This allows clearing the debris without actually having to take the housing apart. Also clear it from the blades or chip size decreases.

Purchased this product last Friday in order to clear my yard of tree limbs that had been cut down several weeks earlier, it did a great job. Assembly was simple with just a few bolts for the hopper and shute to be attached, add the supplied bottle of engine oil, some gas and away you go. Only one negative is the lack of dip-stick for the engine oil, I'm not sure how you are meant to tell when it needs topping up. Out of the box the engine started with just one pull of the cord and was very easy to turn over. The hopper handles smaller twigs, greenery and weeds without difficulty, it just sucks everything into the cutting blades. The limb shute takes the larger branches with ease although you do have to hold onto the longer ones until they are well into the opening to prevent them from whipping around. The collection bag is great quality and large enough for each chipping session so that it isn't too heavy to empty once full. All in all I am very happy with this product.
had only used it once will not start its wothless if i put gas on the air filter it fires right up runs for a few sec and dies i took carb apart and cleaned it 4 time still will not run on its own cannot get it to even try without a prim
when u put debris in the chute it just sits there .you have to find a pretty heavy stick and just keep stirring it . its really a pain in the ****; you spend more time trying to get the debri through the tub it just wears you out. it is a deffinate flaw that make the job so much harder, we have used it 3 times in a year and a half, if it were still in waranty i would take it back. make sur you look at differnt models and brands, im not at all satisified with this chipper.....Jeff alsoone of theblades are bent and we dont put any thing real big down. as much as it cost i thought it eould be a pretty good machine, just make sure you really look at angles and that darn bowl. not happy in north carolina
