Nice planer but the blades already have nicks

I have a previous version of this planer.  It's a nice planer.  Power is as expected for 120 VAC.  It will cut a 6" wide average depth cut without slowing down too much.  It seems well made.  Dust collection with a vacuum is good.  The cuts are reasonably smooth and snipe isn't too bad.

My gripe.  The blades have a nick after maybe 50 ft of planing.  I'm dealing with it, but I went to purchase a new set of blades and two local sears stores didn't have them in stock.  So far the only place I have found them is online for over $50.  Sears wanted tax and something like another $10-15 for shipping, pushing one set of blades over $70.  I'm still trying to figure out how to dodge the shipping.  I'm going to try to find an interchangeable blade too from outside Sears.   Considering how quick I nicked a blade, and the cost of obtaining the blades, this is an expensive planer for the long term.

I also own an old 220 VAC 5 hp floor planer that uses the re-sharpenable blades and I've been able to plane 10 to 20 times more board feet before the nicks would appear in my old planer.  I will say changing the re-sharpenable blades is a pain that I never enjoyed, but if you are planing boards with any knots or planing to do large quantities of wood recommend you purchase a different planer.

Over Priced Regret
I purchased this item hoping it was the Delta unit with granite vs steel inner plate. It is not this at all. 12" boards (pine) are hard to get thru. The chips and the chute can clog up without a vac attached and the dust shoot attachment screws have cracked already as they do not fully seat against the chute material they sit on. For $500 bucks this is expensive and has not done the work I had expected it to do so far. Delta and Dewalt purchase likely would have made me happier now that I tried this the hard way. One good thing, you can get a multi bladed drum but only if you have it shipped so again more money since the multi blade version of this machine is not available at a store. Try online as they have this machine cheaper.

Works great!

DId a lot of reviewing of feedback on various planers. Needed one that would work on all sorts of woods from varying thicknesses. Decided to stick with Craftsman as my shop is full of red and black. Went right to work out of the box. Satisfactorily planed pine, oak, and poplar...hundreds of board feet...and never a hiccup or hesitation. Good quality surfaces...no issues with chipping or grooving. I'm very pleased with the planer and enjoy it various accessories.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Does the trick

I did a lot of comparison with similar models, and this one seemed to offer the best value, especially on a 13 inch planer. I've been using it for about two weeks on mostly hardwood (cherry) and I have been pleased with the results. Sniping has not been a problem when I slightly lift the board before the tail end goes through.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Worked well after gauge was replaced

Picked up the planer, came home, hooked it up, and it ran great... for about 30 minutes. There is a gauge on the front to measure the amount you are about to trim. After about 16-20 feet of board, the gauge broke and a pin dropped. After taking it apart and making a trip back to Sears, I was back to work and no problems. Sears pulled the piece off the floor model and gave me. I've used the planer a lot since and have not had any problems. For home use where you are making light projects, I think you will be pleased.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Makes me look like a Pro

I put this Craftsman Professional Planer on layaway to add to my wood working tool collection. I am still learning a lot about wood working and I have not used a wood planer since I was in 9th grade 35 yrs ago. But this planer was so simple and easy to use. After readiong through the owner's manual and learning the basics of operation, I took my first re-saw stock from my band saw and planed my walnut stock to a polished and uniform 3/4" thickness. The finished product looked like a store bought piece. I was extremely pleased. I done 2 of these and then made some with some large stock pieces of ash. Again, very pleased with the final product that I was able to produce. This planer is making me look like a pro and I am not pro by a long shot. I have more plans for this tomorrow in my shop and feeling more comfortable using the machine, already. Again, if you read through the manual and don't rush, even a novice can turn out some great looking product using this planer. It has power when you need it for the big stuff and compact enough for the small stuff. I will update my review after I put some more miles on it, but so far, this has performed beyond my expectations. Very pleased with my purchase....

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Easy enough for a novice to use

I had put this on layaway to add to my relatively new hobby of wood working. I have been working with wood for about 2yrs and slowly building up my wood tool collection. This thickness planer was my latest addition and I put it to pretty hard word this week and it has worked flawlessly so far. My boards look smooth when I am done planing them down. I read in the manual how much to cut on each path and kept my cuts at or below that limit and had no issues planing my walnut timber for my project. I also have planed ash with it as well with equal results. This has been a huge plus for my little wood shop. I am still learning the machine, but for a novice, I turned out some good planks this week.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Overall
the professional 13 " planer nice tool for my wood shop !

This planer works fine with good dust control ,after I hooked it up to my dust collector system !! Most of the stickers that were on the planer are peeling off already !! It replaced the 1998 12 1/2 planer that I had , only because I could no longer get new knives or the parts to fix the old planer !!!Also wish you had a tec. to talk to about trouble shooting some of the problems I had with the old planner, maybe I could have fixed it for a spare !!! I have alot of craftsman wood working tools in my shop, including a detail biscuit cutter , that I can no longer get the R 3 biscuits from your store ,had to go on the internet and find them. The machine works great , but is of no use without the biscuits..WHAT IS YOUR position on how long you stock parts for an Item, after you no longer sell a tool or supplies for that tool ??????? You also could stock more parts at your HBG. parts warehouse , so the customer don,t have to pay your high shipping costs, most of the time the shipping is more than the part !!!! Thank you for asking me to writethis review and have a nice day , JAMES WILHELM

blades do nick quikly

I'm a relatively novice woodworker.  The planer works fine for me and quickly gets my lumber to thickness. Good dust collection with my shopvac attached. The wood does need a bit of handplaning or sanding to get out the nick marks but with the amount of wood I put through it's not a big deal for me, ...yet.

21748 Planer is worth the price for small batch work

Good for occasional weekend limited only by blade life.  I think the motor and drive would stand up to high(er) volume but have a stockpile of blades on hand before starting.  I get about 40bf of fairly clear 4/4 KD cherry through it per blade change making it an expensive machine to operate ($74 with shipping.)

The unit arrived with broken bevel gears that were replaced next day by Sears. I could not, however, get the rollercase below .003" coplanar with the bed either side to side or front to back.  Not anything to worry about in practice but I’m fussy on machine set up.

Operationally it works like a champ.  Dust control is excellent with a good vacuum on the discharge.  Adjusting the stops is easy and once set it stays there but I still gage every tenth board for thickness out of habit.

In summary, it is a good unit for the price and it does a good job.
