As good as it gets at this price point.
I have owned this air compressor for two years. I waited this long to write a review because the other reviews of this unit are mixed, and I wanted to test it quite a bit before posting an opinion. First, I specifically wanted the horizontal unit so that it would be more stable when moved around. One primary use that I have for it is blowing out irrigation lines for the winter. I can pull this around my property without any risk of it falling over. I also store it under my workbench so it takes up less space in my shop. The only problem that I have encountered was that the air pump was quite low on oil when I received this unit. Sears does not sell synthetic air compressor oil, so I had to mail-order it from another vendor. I am not permitted to say the name of the competitor here but just think Tools that are Northern. You must check the oil level before use. Next, you need a 20 amp power supply to reliably run this air compressor. Many of the problems reported about this air compressor are actually insufficient home wiring, not the fault of the product. The wheels are bent on some of these units as they are using squeeze/clamp type forklifts at some Sears warehouses, rather than lift type forklifts. The squeeze type crushes the box and contents. Check the box for damage when you pick it up (the box has a warning printed on it that specifically prohibits clamp type forklifts). The unit has not given me any problems at all. It is powerful enough to blow out irrigation lines, run air tools, paint, and inflate anything you want to inflate. It is much quieter than a single stage oil-less compressor. The black "Professional" Sears air compressors are much better that the economy "Red" product line. The electric motor and air pump are made in China, the air tank is made in USA and the unit is assembled in USA. The tank is actually the important part, as that is what can get you hurt if it fails. This is as close as you are going to get to made in USA at this price point. If I had to buy it again, I would without hesitation.

      Not Happy
This compressor does not put out enough air and takes way too long to re fill the tank. My old Sears 2HP Compressor worked great for 25 years, never tripped a breaker never left me without air until I wore it out due to poor maintenance. I failed to change the oil often enough. It broke. This new compressor tripped breakers all the time running on 110. I assumed it was a power shortage so I upgraded to 220 power and thought all would be fixed. No chance. Now it overheats the motor every time I try and work it. It will not run continuously for any amount of time without tripping the overheat button. I have forced fan fed air over it while working and it still overheats. Imangine my disappointment when I searched on line to find many people have this issue. Don't buy one, if you like this one search Craigs List, I see them for sale all the time for $200 because they don't work as advertised. If you want a compressor to fill tires sometimes it is fine, just don't expect it to be a worker. The air it puts out is so hot it creates a lot of moisture issues when it does run. Sorry I don't have any positives. Sears should recall this product.

This Is A Very Good Unit

This air compressor does what it is advertised to do. It is priced right, made with quality components and it is assembled well. It is very sturdy and runs smooth. I know this because I checked it all. No thing is perfect and I don't see any potential issues if used correctly. I have an earlier model in use for at least 20 years and I got this one for a gift. I read some of the reviews on this one before I made the purchase despite some of the negativity. Although to some, this might be considered an ordinary household item, it really isn't just because it can be used at home. I say this with the understanding that line voltage (electric service voltage) varies from house to house or even within the same house. Thus, it can be 110, 115 or 120v. It can be even lower or higher based on several factors that which an electrician can explain best. A simple voltage reader will show you the exact voltage at a particular receptacle. If you're having problems with yours or for anyone interested in picking up one of these, my recommendation would be to pay close attention to the minimum and maximum requirements. For any doubt, don't hesitate to ask someone qualified. As described, the motor is rated 120/240v . The 120 means just that, line voltage (electric service at the receptacle.) The 240 means if it's being connected to two 120 lines should you elect to configure that option. You can research why and if you should even consider the higher voltage configuration but, if you experience blowing breakers, stalling, not starting, running excessively hot, etc., I don't think this unit is for you. However a qualified electrician can best analyze your circuit. No one person knows everything. Licensed individuals know more than some of us about things and there are plenty of good people out there to help you and willing to speak with you without charging you for some helpful information. The manual depicts how to perform the break in period but it doesn't specify to change the oil right after. I would recommend changing it immediately after the break-in as well as after prolonged usage because it will help prevent premature wear out over the years. A thought regarding a water separator. The manual explains the importance of draining the water accumulation in the tank. In short, water/moisture is created from temperature differentials. Please know that the air hoses themselves, especially longer ones also create moisture within itself. So, the more heat you can extract from the compressed air in the tank, the better off you'll be. Here's an "old school" tip: for extra long hoses during outside use especially in the summer, dedicate a 10' hose with couplers coiled up in a bucket with cool water. Hope this review helps.

      Excellent Compressor

I've owned this compressor for over 5 years now and it still runs perfect. It is MUCH quieter than my old oiless compressor. It runs fine EVERY time that I plug it in to a 20 AMP outlet. It sometimes trips the breaker when I plug it into a 15AMP breaker. I have run it with a 100 foot extension cord but it was a 10 gage extension cord and I had no problems running it all day long this way while spraying a house with an HVLP gun. I run AMSOIL synthetic compressor oil in it and it actually makes it sun cooler and a few decibels quieter. I did add a different drain valve (lever type instead of the screw type it came with) which makes it much easier to drain. I also added a water/oil separator right at the outlet to prevent contaminants from getting into tools. This compressor has not given me any problems over the last 5 years after hundreds of uses (except when connecting it to a 15 AMP outlet). Any outlet in a garage should be a 20AMP anyway. I even forgot to drain it once and it still had over 130psi in it after 3 weeks. This has been an excellent compressor.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Best product available for the price

Solidly built, quiet and efficient. Easy to set up and use. Plenty of capacity for all homeowner and most contractor use. Compared to other similar products, it's the best choice.

      like this compressor

I've had this compressor for 5 years and have not had many issues with it. It would been nice if they shipped the oil with the compressor, so when I got it I could have used it, had to go to parts store to get compressor oil. It also required a timed delay fuse for start up. Holds air a long time so you don't have to fill tank again to inflate a small tire or to blow something off. Very quiet not like the oil less compressors.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS = NO PROBLEMS

Very quiet when running. This was a nice surprise. Handles my work load easily. No leaks. Make sure to run from a 20-amp circuit and charging should be just fine. Use longer air hoses - do NOT use extension cords.

      Nice step up

no leaks air or oil, starts hard in the cold, 30s i have to completly drain the tank when it is cold to get the motor to start pumping, could be due to the distance from the eletrical service entrance, i may try switching to 240V and see if that helps, its nice to have a compressor that is quiet and has a longer run time between topup, it came ready to go from the box, after a 30 minute no load break in period.

Will NOT run off a generator!

Great compressor and quiet unless you need to power it from a generator. Attempted to connect using a 3000 watt big red "Hon" and also a "Yam" blue generator (probably can't use the brand names) and a 6300 "Yam" . Could not start up and overloaded the gen.

      Great compressor

I have owned this compressor since 2005, and its been reliable. with estimated 400+ hours on it with yearly Amsoil oil changes this compressor has never let me down, yes it draws heavy on circuits its to be expected when starting a compressor with pressure in the system. Never had any leaks. I drain the tank after every use and I have recommended this to friends and they are just as happy with its performance. Only suggestion don't use cheep ************** tools or low grade craftsman. I use the tools from my tool box at work all high grade tools, found works better than cheepy tools. And also found if your intelligent enough to use a PROFFESIONAL grade compressor you would be smart enough to understand starting amp load rating of a motor.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
