Craftsman  Ratcheting Tube and Pipe Cutter

Based on the recommendation of other CC members I grabbed one of these the other day for some work I was doing in the garage.  I recently added a large air compressor and a retractable hose reel and I had a temporary hose between the two and finally got around to adding a copper pipe in the middle.

I bought the pipe and started cutting away.  Yes, it is a brand new tool and one expects it to cut fast and clean but I never expected I wouldn't actually have to ream the cuts (though I did) since they were so clean!

as i stated earlier i went to sears today and since my wife and i are going to redo the bathroom i picked up this pvc pipe cutter and i cant ait to use it when we do that job i want to be able to help at any cost to my plumber and save him time and i also learn about it myself from what i see this cutter has to be a must in every plumbers tool kit so for all you plumbers out there go out and get this cutter you wont be sorry it will make your job so much easier and the price is right its not an expensive tool ...steve

Every once in a great while there is a innovation made that takes a basic tool that has been a standard for years and MAKES IT BETTER. When that happens it is normally the result of Craftsman finding a better way.

Such is the case for this Ratcheting Pipe Cutter. A traditional pipe cutter hasn't changed much over the past several decades. It is a simple deisgn and an effective tool. You simply wrap the jaws of the pipe cutter around the pipe, tighten the jaw adjustment snug and rotate the entire tool around the pipe. This action scores the pipe. Then you re-tighten the jaw adjustment and repeat. You continue to rotate, tighten and rotate, tighten until you have successfully cut the pipe.

The problem with this tool is that because the entire tool must rotate 360 degrees around the pipe. You don't always have the luxury of so much space. Suppose you need to cut a piece of copper tubing in a stud wall which has been ran only inches from another piece of copper tubing. The close proximity of the two pipes makes it impossible to rotate the tool completely around the pipe to be cut.

Enter the Tool Expects at Craftsman. With this handle Ratcheting Pipe Cutter there is no need to spin the tool around the pipe. You simple make your scoring cut, tighten you jaw adjustment, ratchet the cutter back to the original position and make another scoring cut. Then repeat these steps until the pipe has been cut.

This tool will not necessarily replace traditional pipe cutters but it is great to have the option. You never know exactly what you'll find when you open up that wall!

I bought a pair of these about a year ago and they break every time I use them. I take them back and they replace them. Great idea but they are not built well. The feed screw strips out after the first use.

This ratcheting cutter makes quick work of cutting through pipes.  I used it to cut copper sweat pipe for installing bathroom plumbing and it cut all the pipe without leaving any burrs on the end. 

These cutters are great for getting around studs cutting pipes in walls and in tight ceilings.
