It is not bad for price. It simple in design and effective. However, not all door mortise router bits will work with it. I bought a router bit at ********** that didn't work with this template. I would like sears to come up with a clamp-able design that is really sturdy.

I carpenter for a living, and have one of these templates. I too should have purchased 2, (will buy another, soon) If I have a lot of doors to do, I use my Porter-cable mortising setup, but for just a couple of doors these work fine. Yes the 3.5 template is a little over sized. I enlarged the holes and use drywall screws to secure and remove the template. They should come with screws instead of nails. It is not a bad little template, but purchase 2 or 3. Sears used to have a 3 hinge mortise setup, but they did away with it.

Hey for 9 bucks, this item is pretty good. I used it to router hinge mortises in 7-8 doors in my house and it was quite reliable. Only complaint is the plastic guide for mortising a 3.5" hinge is not quite accurate. It allows slightly to much material to be removed and your hinge will not fit snugly. Minor inconvienance, but easy to work around. If I had to do it again, I would probably buy 2 of these so that I could mount them both on the top and bottom hinge and do 2 cuts in 1 shot with my router. Otherwise you have to pry it off each time you do the top and bottom mortise. Oh yeah, buy some extra tack nails to tack the template to the door. It only comes with 2 and those will get bent easily if you're prying it off several doors.
