I recently bought the Craftsman #87702. I wrote a review under abritton120. I was unsure if I did the right decision, so I went to buy the 20890 one as well. I am not a mechanic, but I do work on cars for about 20 years. Not an expert, but I have a good idea what these items do. Some people write bad reviews, but have no clue as to why. I compared both items side by side, they are nearly identical, but I prefer the 20890, I love the fact that it has the built in bluish light, which is handy when you work under a darkish dash or garage. I also like the fact it has LD, or live data. The 87702 only has freeze frame. I thought it would be handy to have this feature since you know that the data frequently changes from second to second. I suppose you can free frame every few seconds, but it is not the same. I also hate being such a perfectionist, but on the factory box on the 20890 it states it checks 25 vital pieces of information within 15 seconds, but if you read the side of the box it states it reads 20 pieces of data in 10 seconds? Well, which one is it? Also, I still have not mastered these items, but on one of them, I cleared the tester, but the middle light is still a bright yellow, I took out the batteries and installed them the next day and it is still on. How on earth do I turn off all 3 lights? I even cleared the DTC's the day before. The owner?s manual on the 87702 is better than this model (20890). Two reasons, it is spiral bound and it actually tells you what the problems are. The manual on the 20890 is not that detailed. I assume the 20890 tests for more things, it even checks your VIN number if you have a car 2000 and up. Both models do not test for ABS or transmission codes (though the 20890 says it has an ABS optional upgrade). Maybe it is me, but optional to me means $$$$. I also did not find it necessary to install the software, I just Google the code, tons if info. 87702 uses 2AA batteries, the 20890 used 3 AA batteries (I guess for the lights). Both testers also automatically connect and no need to enter anything, some scanners will have you there enter make, model, year etc. Not a big deal if you are in the garage, but if you are stranded on a dark highway, every second counts. Both scanners are basically identical, but I did not mind paying extra for the 20890. Is it worth 80-90 bucks more? I really cannot answer that. That is why I did this review and video as well. Also, I read some of the comments and I truly get frustrated. Some folks will give a bad review simply because the code that was spit out can be several things. Welcome to the automotive world. The scanner did its job, period. NO scanner in the world will tell you what it is exactly. Further tests are required, like the manual states. These scanners are just another tool in your arsenal, it does not "fix your car" or pinpoint what it is, just gives you a good idea where to start.

Perfect tool for any automotive enthusiast. What you are getting is the OBD2 reader that reads all the check engine light codes. This one doesn?t read ABS or SRS codes ? but that?s alright since I don?t have any American made cars ? and the support for it is very limited, even for the cars that it can read. The Craftsman 20890 can pull LIVE DATA from the car. This is the exact same model as INNOVA 3130 scan tool and that goes for $180 on a***** dot com, $326 retail direct from INNOVA. Got mine on sale + 5% off Craftsman tools using Sears charge card. Not a bad deal for looking up codes.

i bought a used jeep with many miles ,scanner let me know if any codes or problems before i bought it. however cd disc with scanner works only with windows pc. won't work on a mac. for help and support from web site.

The online description of its capabilities does it no justice. So far it has provided every parameter needed to resolve issues. It connects to my PC with a USB cord. Worth every penny. As for the negative reviews: this tool is only as good as the user operating it. If you're not a mechanic with an understanding of fuel and computer controlled systems, dont go buy this and expect it to magically fix your car problems on its own.

My check engine light had been on for a while. Inspection time was coming up and I decided to find out what was wrong. Turned out to be a bad O2 sensor. Found a good price on a pair of sensors, swapped them out myself and passed inspection. The scanner paid for itself the first time around.
The Scan Tool Seems to be very good for Intermediate users I scanned my engine code and was able to get the correct information which enabled me to fix my problem with little effort. This tool saved me hundreds of Dollars in labor costs if I visited a local Repair shop, I also reset the engine light on several of my friends cars
