I love Sears and I have loved Cratsman products, but if this represents the future of "Craftsman", I am done. I bought the WeedWacker 2 months ago and had used it maybe 6 times before it wouldn't start anymore. When it did run previously, I had the problem
the same reported by others - it would only run at full speed and idle, but nothing in between and it would try to kill if not given full throttle. Now it won't start at all and I have damaged my shoulder trying to get it started. I checked the spark and the gas and both were fine. Tried to call the 800 number for help and got no answer after 10 minutes on hold. Was loading the trimmer into the car to return it when I notice it was leaking fuel/oil. Looked closer and discovered that the cover where the optional cover attaches was loose. Turns out that it needs to be tight to have compression in the cylinder. Besides being a ridiculous design, the quality control inspectors never caught that the two screws had not been tightened (and one was missing entirely). I am keeping the trimmer for now because I don't have the receipt, but I have NEVER been so disappointed with Sears!
Have had weed wacker for four years and used all year long due to attachments. Unit is very basic and you get what you pay for. This winter it wouldn't start. Removed plastic cover and had a look as I had idea how these work. Called local repair shop and was told to toss it and buy a another one. So replaced spark plug, nothing. Noticed that when cranked and spark plug removed but connected to wire and touching engine to ground, no spark. Did some researched and ended up ordering a new ignition coil for $30. Very easy to replace part, two screws. Started right back up.
I bought this as a gift for my son-in-law. He had a corded electric trimmer before and wore it out. He wanted an edger. I wanted a trimmer with an edger function. I was disappointed to find that the gas-powered trimmers do not have the head that adjusts to edge like the electric ones have. Also, the gas-powered trimmers do not have the feature of tapping the head on the ground to release more cord, which is really useful. I ended up buying him the WeedWacker for Christmas and an edger attachment for his birthday.
Overall: I've owned this trimmer for six months but it's only been operational for half that time. It worked fairly well out of the box but seemed under powered. Turns out a casing screw was broken so it was losing compression. Sears fixed it under warranty and I had ten weeks of great operation. The cutting head then metaled and ripped it's self apart. It took Sears three months to admit they couldn't fix the unit and they gave me a replacement. Sears also extended the warranty for three more years which I'm sure I'll be using. My last Craftsman went for 30 years. I'm not expected a tenth of that with this model. Doing it over again, I buy a more expensive Stihl that would last the rest of my life. Pros: When working properly, the unit has plenty of power to cut through thick grass. Unit vibration and weight are good. I bought a shoulder strap to help care the weight and could comfortable trim for thirty minutes. As with any trimmer, you have to be careful with the line. I got plenty of life out of each line if I kept it away from rocks, fences, and other hard surface. Cons: The weak construction noted above. Changing the line if fairly quick and easy - not as convenient as the self extending units I've had in the past, but OK. The unit is a little short for taller people. I'm 6'-1" and have to kept a wide stance to get the unit level with the ground. With the handle in the highest position, the unit is a harder to control. The shoulder strap helped.
I bought this a couple summers ago. Like others say...full speed or nothing at all. The clutch is very difficult to engage without killing the engine and really preferred my old wacker that would spin all the time. Cant wait for it to die. Wear earplugs. Has always started fine, but is a real pain to get to run right and I find that it doesn't really seem to work well until I'm done with the lawn.
The grass in my new home purchase was out of control. The weed wacker which I purchased helped me take control of the weeds in no time. I am very pleased that I have bought this item for my home.
I have a large yard that takes half a day to mow and trim. My job has just gotten easier with this trimmer. It is quick to start and the quick change makes things a lot faster. It is powerful too.
