71102 Trimmer Review and Tips for Smooth Operation: Check it Out.
Hopefully this will help you all out and anyone else who buys this trimmer. I bought one and had it constantly stall out on me only in the off choke setting. I replaced the fuel mixture, cleaned and oiled the air filter and fiddled with the idle screw to no avail. The warranty rep told me to exchange the unit because it was only one week old. The replacement also stalled out in the off choke setting (perhaps even a little worse than the first trimmer did). Something was not clicking so I decided (after a lot of research) to adjust the lo-speed needle (closest of the two special screws towards the engine) on the carburetor (counter clock wise 1/8th of a turn to richen the mixture ? did it without the special Single D carb tool). Doing that plus increasing the idle fixed it. This may help those who have trouble starting it as well (I did not) Since then it?s operated for 45 minutes for two sessions straight with no hesitation or stalling at any rpm. It is a very strong and capable!

Craftsman WeedWacker VERY poorly built

I love Sears and I have loved Cratsman products, but if this represents the future of "Craftsman", I am done. I bought the WeedWacker 2 months ago and had used it maybe 6 times before it wouldn't start anymore. When it did run previously, I had the problem
the same reported by others - it would only run at full speed and idle, but nothing in between and it would try to kill if not given full throttle. Now it won't start at all and I have damaged my shoulder trying to get it started. I checked the spark and the gas and both were fine. Tried to call the 800 number for help and got no answer after 10 minutes on hold. Was loading the trimmer into the car to return it when I notice it was leaking fuel/oil. Looked closer and discovered that the cover where the optional cover attaches was loose. Turns out that it needs to be tight to have compression in the cylinder. Besides being a ridiculous design, the quality control inspectors never caught that the two screws had not been tightened (and one was missing entirely). I am keeping the trimmer for now because I don't have the receipt, but I have NEVER been so disappointed with Sears!

*** DO NOT BUY this piece of garbage ***

I bought this trimmer on Father's Day this year and I rue the decision to this day. It was nicely priced at $100. I had no issues with the packaging, the assembly, the instructions ... even the somewhat arduous starting method. The problem is the trimmer is poorly designed with respect to the angle of the head. Very hard to achieve a level cut. Also, the engine continually died on me, unless I was giving this piece of junk engine full throttle. Moreover, the trimmer head will stop spinning (and therefore cutting) at any speed lower than full throttle. So it's either going to shred everything in it's path, or it will cease to spin at all. Because of the flat angle of pole and head, it makes it very hard to not dig into the turf and destroy the grass. Lastly, the **** thing vibrates down the shaft so much, that my hands were numb and sore after only 15-20 minutes of use. I've never written a review on a product before in my life, but this thing was SO BAD, that I just had to create an account here and warn all of you - DO NOT BUY this piece of garbage. PS - Sears refused to take the **** thing back too. I called in an effort to return after 35 days of purchase and policy is return w/in 30 days. Do not make the same mistake I did. $100 bucks down the drain! Blake

Don't waste you're time or money

Had had a Craftsman for 10 years .. it started giving me run problems .. it had been a great machine .. bought this unit took it back the next day took 10 min to start and then would only run 1/2 choked .. if you tried to cut any thick grass the head would stop turning even at full throttle ... only did 1/2 my yard and took it back ... cleaned the carburetor on my old Craftsman and it runs like new again .. should have done that in the first place ..

Weed wacker blues

I had looked forward to the so called easy start features of this machine. However, it was anything but easy start. I had some pre-mixed gas that runs just fine in my Husky chainsaw. I tried this and cranked and cranked and cranked before it would finally fire and run at an idle. On this gas, it never would run fast enough to actually cut the weeds. The instructions inside the box say new gas and they really mean it. A strap to take some of the weight off your arms would be very nice. After rotator cuff surgery, it was hard on my shoulders and arms. However, once it was running at speed, it did cut through weeds very nicely. I am in my 60's and had hoped that it would be a little easier on my body than it is. Although it does take some serious cranking to start, it does a good job after starting. The instructions do not tell you what to do with all the gas over a month old. The old gas/oil blend make my Prius smoke like a diesel.

Good Product

This item was out of stock in the store and the clerk helped me order it from the store. The register gave an arrival date of two weeks out but one week out I called and it was in. Don't trust their arrival date! Call! As for the weed-eater, the attachments are a plus. The speed electric starter is really cool when you don't feel like tugging a bunch. And I've ordered the edger attachment and am looking forward to its arrival. I am disappointed with the power. I'm cutting just standard light grass and it seems to bog down. Actually it seems to not want to hit wide open throttle just in the open air because doesn't have the power to turn the head. It seems like even the head and cord is a little bit of a struggle for it. Hopping it will handle the edger okay. Thinking that would be much heavier than just cord, so we'll see.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

DO NOT BUY! Wish I had listened to the reviews!

Hard to start, followed the directions and that is worse than the way I get it started. Very noisy! Only one speed and that is wide open, If you idle it down the wheel stops and when you try to speed up the engine dies. The vibration is aweful, my hands are numb after 10 minutes of operation. I had a Homelite for 12 years, wish I had bought another Homelite. I am going to try and return it, but I can guess how that is going to turn out. I am surprised Sears/Craftsman puts their name on it.
