Check oil !!
The electric motor on my 27 year old Craftsman 20 gall. 3 hp just died so I decided rather than replace the motor, to get something with more air volume. The only problem I had with the pld unit was an oil leak that developed in the compressor oil pan because of porosity which I took apart and repaired with epoxy 20 years ago, since the warranty had expired. Well, the best deal going was the 60 gallon, 3 h.p. vertical for 489.00 at my local Sears. It was packaged well and did not have any obvious damage or oil leakage. I hooked up the required 220 volt power, leveled the base and installed the appropriate fittings in the tank. According to the directions, the compressor pump was pre-filled with oil and I only had to perform the required break in period for 30 minutes, drain, refill etc... Experience told me to check the oil and I am very glad I did. The oil didn't even register on the dipstick and I needed to add approx. 10 oz of oil to the compressor head. This unit wouldn't of lasted very long being this low on oil. After finding this, I proceeded to check every nut and bolt, fitting etc... to make sure nothing else was compromised. Where is the quality assurance at the factory? Sears should take note and revamp inspection process ASAP. People expect brand new components to work properly and don't want any hassels right from the start! Overall the unit now works great and I look forward to many years of service.

Two Weeks in and the replacement is on its way...leaking
I buy Craftsman Professional for a reason....that reason being that I want things to work and work well. So far that has been the case until I bought this Air Compressor. The leaks between the head and the tank were so bad that I didn't need to use liquid leak detector ...tried to tighten the fittings but still leaked. Called for a service repair and they suggested a replacement since it had only been two weeks. But catch is I have to load it back up and take it back to the store to get the replacement. Which there is no guarantee that the replacement won't leak.I really am starting to think that Craftsman quality isn't what it used to be. There is no way this unit was ever tested before it left the factory. !! I should have headed the other reviews....if I had it to do all over again I would probably go with IR.

2nd Compressor With Problems

This is the second compressor for me. The sales manager was kind enough to credit half the cost from my first compressor even though it was out of warranty. The first compressor leaked oil and seized up in less then 3 years. My new compressor does the same, leaks oil. It also continues to trip the circuit. I call an electrician who has informed me that it's pulling 57 amps at start up. It should be pulling no more then 17. I guess that's why we are popping the breaker twice a day. I'm not sure why Craftsmen would make such a poor design. I have read several reviews whereby the head leaks oil. Unfortunately this compressor is a piece of junk. The price is great but it's a piece of junk.

Didn't last long....

Well this didn't last too long....Have had this POS wired up for a week. It started fine and seemed to work fine. I went in the garage a few days later. Turned on the compressor. It blew my 20 amp 250V breaker. Ok fine...I upgraded breaker to a 25 amp. Reset motor....It keeps tripping breaker. It did not do this before. I can hear a buzzing sound like motor doesn't really want to start. This has less than 1 hour of run time on it. I should've listed to the other reviews....

Failed when I needed it most

Item looked good, hard wired to electrical panel, started and ran good. Noticed tank is not treated inside for rust, drain often, Second is no regulator or connections other than a female pipe plug on the side of tank. third, it has ran about 40 hours in the last year. Today the start capacitor failed, leaked capacitor oil down the cover and on the motor. The motor is 3.1 running horse power.. make believe 3 horse, not like the old compressor 3 horse power. Motor not a seal duty motor, not good for paint fumes, or Mud dobber wasps, wrap a window screen around it to keep the bugs out!

Overall
Surprisingly quiet for the amount of power

I purchased this item when I walked into the store and saw that it was $270 off. I wasn't necessarily interested in purchasing a compressor of this capacity, but given the range of jobs I'd like to perform with it, including automotive painting, I couldn't pass it up. I paid $459 for the unit, which is substantially less than any other compressor of similar size can be found for, even at the cheap, "bargain-brand" tool suppliers. The only drawback is that it requires a direct-wired 220 volt supply, and I can't determine why. It only draws 15 volts and is 1 stage, so I would infer that it could probably be functional without the extra voltage. However, that aside, once I ran my electric and powered the unit I was pleasantly surprised....first, it supplies ample power for any possible job you can imagine, but more importantly, it doesn't deafen you like compressors have a tendancy to do. I have this installed in my garage, and can still hear my radio just fine even when on a quiet volume when this compressor is running. I'd highly suggest this item, especially at the incredible sales price, for anyone interested in a compressor with versatility. Please note that I was awarded for writing this review.

Quality at my kind of price

I do a lot of hobby work out of my home and I have four smaller compressors but none of them could do blasting that I wanted to do so I had been waiting and looking and I finally found one I could afford that would do what I needed it to do.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

nice and quiet

This item is quiet but powerful. It was easy to set up as I had to create a new plug for it. I left it on the pallet it came on and it's set up and ready to go. But the quietness is key!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Awesome purchase

I bought this item for my husband. He has been needing one. It was easy for my husband to wire it up and to get the compressor going. To my surprise the compressor was very quite! I can hardly hear it in the house! It has enough power though for my husband to do all the mechincal work he needs to do!

I would recommend this product to a friend.
