Never had a sander before for the things I was doing having one made sense , was tired of doing everything by hand, I read the reviews on this one and I have to say it works just fine , powerful enough for me. Some said the belt would stop when the work is pressed into the belt I haven't had that problem. Shouldn't be pressing that hard to begin with. The only problem I had was a belt adjustment it was a little loose at startup but tightened it and good to go.
I have no power issues with this sander. I purcahsed the sander at a discount from a Sears store that was closing. It was the display model and the last one they had. This little unit is perfect for hobbiest and weekend DIY projects. As soon as I got it home I started sanding with it and so far it's performed as expected, no slow starts, no bogging down. I'm not saying this is the right sander for everyone or for every job. Don't expect a heavy duty workhorse at this price or this model... but like any tool... use it as it's designed and it should be a nice sander for you.
I owned and used the older version for 3 years. It was a full 5 amp motor with plenty of power. This one has no power at all. If I use heavier than 100 grit belts it will stall with just the weight of the wood (no pressure at all!)
Good solid sander for a hobbyist. I don't know why everyone keeps saying that it's under powered. This sander is not under powered. Yes, if you press down to hard it will stop the belt, but you should not be pressing down that hard to begin with. Sanding is all about patience, at least if you want the piece to look nice. I bought this sander to help with the sanding chores for a bedroom set I am building out of oak, and it does an excellent job of smoothing out all of the rough spots and evening the boards out. My two biggest complaints with the sander (and the reason for four stars) are: 1. The sawdust cover prevents you from being able to sand longer pieces. Not a huge deal because it is just as easy to sand longer pieces with a hand-held unit, but it would be nice to have the option to do longer pieces. 2. The bigger of the two issues: it appears that the vibrations from the sander were turning the adjustment **** at times, even after bolting the sander to a sturdy table. There were times when I was sanding that the belt would suddenly start moving (extremely fast) to one side or the other and I would have to stop sanding and adjust the belt, only to have it do it again later on. There would be times when I could go for an hour without having to make adjustments, but there were also times when the belt would start moving again after only a minute or two. I realize that there is always some movement with belt sanders, but on these occasions the belt would move very quickly to one side or the other, and would rub along the edge of the housing, and if you didn't quickly adjust the sander or turn it off, it would fray the edge of the belt and sometimes would rub so hard against the housing that it would stop the belt completely.

At one time the Craftsman name stood for something. Not anymore. The components were cheap, belt tension could not be adjusted and instead of running smoothly it had a definite "thump" with every revolution which made for difficult sanding. Definitely would not recommend this. Fortunately, they readily accepted the return.
It stalled on startup so I took the bottom plate off to see what was the matter. The belt was WAY too loose, hitting the housing on startup. Tightened the belt with the already provided belt tightener adjustment (opposite end of sander from on/off switch) and has been working like a dream ever since! The sander is NOT underpowered, just poorly belt-adjusted at factory.
