Craftsman 6" Bench Vise-Workhorse!

I've used and abused my Craftsman 6" HD Vise for the past 10 years and it has never failed me. Initially I found too much play in the opening\closing cam action, but quickly remedied that by tightening the main swivel bolt that was 2 threads loose. Since then, this vise has helped me hand threaded 2" pipe, has supported multiple large woodworking projects for construction and assembly fabrication, drill large 1\2" plate steel and hammer into submission rebar and angled steel with my shop 5# double head sledge.

I find the 6" vise has a large opening capacity, holds objects tightly and releases with ease. It isn't designed for industrial use, but then it only comes in at 10-20% of the commercial vise $$$ market! Yep, it's easily handles all of my DIY projects and has been an Outstanding supportive unit for my homeowner construction-fabrication-maintenance needs!

Piece of junk
Got this vise for Christmas, used it twice. I put a heavy duty bolt with lock nut on it in the vise and tightened it down. First the jaw snapped in half so I moved the bolt to the other half for a good grip, this time it held until I started to pull on the breaker bar. After a couple of tugs on the breaker bar, the vise actually broke in half! I guess I am closer to superman than I thought. I would never recommend this product to any of my friends and will be looking for a better quality product.

So Far So Good. Worth the price of Admission

I was in a jam when my less than a year old HF 6" vise snapped a jaw and needed another vise quick. I drove up the block to Sears and picked this one up for a little more than $55.00 out the door price. I read the reviews here and was kind of nervous about getting another eventual heavy duty paper weight. But by now I know that unless your prepared to spend some serious money, or luck out at an Estate Sale and snap one up made at the latest in the late '80s your not going to get the kind of vise that will last forever and/or take a serious beating. Once mounted this vise is a bit hard to swivel, I've read about the fix for that. The jaws are square when closed and the screw turns true. So far I've been able to continue the project I was working on and we'll see how long this one lasts. For the money I spent this vise is worth the price of admission.

Nice look but..

The basics. The jaws don't line up! With a shim I got them close but still.. The swivel barely moves.. Had to use a set of washers for it to move freely. Not impressed with finish but it is a solid unit.

Heavy Metal

I like this vise quite a bit, I can expand it out to about 8 inches, maybe more, and it is solid. Just had to put a couple washers on the underside swivel bolt as the bolt head was not large enough to apply proper holding pressure to the plate.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Swivel lock does not hold vice in place

I bought this vice  as a DIYer to hold parts that i am working on and do things such as straighten or bend light metal pieces -- as to make brackets and so forth.  I noticed immediately that the swivel lock does not hold the vise from moving hardly at all.  I had a small L-bracket that I clamped in the vise and put locking pliers on the other side to straighten it a little bit.  This was an impossible task because the vise would keep swiveling.  I had to beat on the swivel lock lever with a 3 pound sledge until it would tighten no more (I'm really surprised that I didn't bend the heck out of the bar on the swivel lock), but the vise would still swivel/spin when I put sideways force on it attempting to straighten my piece.  This thing is only good for clamping, but after reading other reviews, I'm now afriad to even do that with too much force.  I wasn't interested in spending hundreds on a vice, but I looked at one of the local home-improvement stores, and their vices seem much nicer for just a few dollars more.
