I picked this up an a whim at the Black Friday sale because for $9.99, I figured I couldn't go wrong. I'm glad I purchased it. I have used it since then when repairing my heatpump (thankfilly it turned out just to be a bad fan motor). I also used it when we installed a dimmer in the hallway light and checking the connections in my travel trailer to get the freshwater pump working. We have also used it to check out wall outlets inside and outside the house to see it they were getting current (both outside and one inside outlet had failed and were replaced). It has performed admirably during all of these tasks.
I would recommend this multimeter to any homeowner who needs one.
I tried the voltage from my home powersuply, which should be 120 voltage, but this thing gives about 180v, tried a 1.5v battery, it reads about 2.0v. What a waste of time, get to return it.

great but the last one we bought came with a case which this one did not.

Does everything a DIY needs, is not cheap feeling at all, and always has served me wonderfully for 3 years now. Reading some of these reviews makes me laugh, and shake my head in amazement, like the guy who complains he bought it for $10 and it doesn't compare to his Fluke, "it feels too light". And he had to buy a 9v battery! Wah! (It worked just fine though.) Got to be Fluke salesmen making these negative reviews to justify the overpriced products they push. Unreal, I would hate to work in customer service with the people in this country today, its a bunch of spoiled brats. And thats the men. No wonder we cannot make American products anymore, this $10 tool is great and people complain, if it was American made it would cost double and then some billybob would lose his last front tooth screaming about a multimeter feeling too light or the display wasnt large enough. This used to be a pretty nice country with men in it.

Short story - my trusty Phillips ECG meter finally decided to quit functioning after about 20 years, I needed a simple meter to measure voltage, amperage, and test continuity for the time being, until I decided on a nicer replacement for the ECG. I bought this inexpensive Craftsman unit cause it should have been able to fit that bill. It did not. The first one I got wouldn't measure continuity. Right out of the box, any time you rotated the dial into that position, the unit began to beep, without the probes touching anything. I returned it the same day and swapped it for another one. The second unit seemed to function decently on voltage (I realized how much I miss auto-ranging) and continuity it worked passably (the buzzer was not very loud on this unit.) But the second unit would not measure DC amperage (current) no matter what you tried. I've returned the second unit, and had the local Sears Homestore folks credit it toward one of the nicer models in the range.

This tester is very rugged. I have pulled and jerked on the cord and dropped it many times and is as good as new. Especially like the longer cord so can find a good ground.

The Craftsman multimeter has a bright clear digital display and the compact size makes it easy to transport. The multimeter is powered with a 9V battery and to extend battery life just remember to turn it off. The red outer case protects the multimeter from small bumps and has a kickstand for improved viewing positions. Handy to use throughout the house for checking out circuits, batteries and much more.

This Craftsman digital multimeter is surprisingly easy to use. The provided test leads are more heavy duty than others I've seen. The testing of batteries is a nice feature to have built into a unit at this price. I find myself hard-pressed to come up with negatives on this unit. The batteries are a pain to replace because of the black rubber sleeve (not in the provided picture), and I wish that this operated on AAA or AA batteries instead of one 9v. Overall the device works flawlessly and is easy to use, even without autosensing. This is recommended for those wanting an entry level digital multimeter.

Cheap Chinese Junk, don't be fooled by the Craftsman name. The fuses always blow, but when you try to change the fuses, they get stuck up inside the meter, and you can't get them out. Seriously, you'll spend an hour trying to pry the old fuse out of the meter. The meter is cludgy, and tough to figure out. Like, where do you plug the wires? It's not intuitive, and you're never sure weather you're getting the right measurement. The probes are cheap and you'll need to spend extra money to get clips for the probes. And, the battery and fuse compartment are screwed in--why such a hassle to change the battery? You're better off buying a $2 model at ************** than trying to get this thing to work. I'm very disappointed.

Reiterating what the other reviewer said about this meter, it appears the test leads that are included with the meter are of questionable quality. Usually, touching the leads together in the audible continuity test will get a continuous BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP, but it's erratic with these leads (sometimes 0 ohms, sometimes infinite, sometimes in between). To verify I switched the leads with a set from an older Sears meter and those worked properly with this meter (and the "newer" leads also had a problem when connected to my older meter). Not sure if I could recommend this meter when you'll either need to purchase a new set of test leads right away or need to exchange the unit until you a total package that works properly.
