Great tool for it's price
I've owned this tool for about a month now and I've used it on various vehicles with the check engine light on, It is a great tool for it's price. I like the live data stream option for OBD2, it carrys most of the sensors you need for diagnosis. Some people are under the impression that you should be able to see live data for OBD1 as well, but you can't, and you never will on any scantool you buy. OBD1 was just the first protocol for OBD (Onboard Diagnostics) to be required to be put in vehicles by 1988. It is just basic trouble codes that you can read, that's it for OBD1. This Tool provides pretty much everything you need for looking up trouble codes, scanning for live data (OBD2) and turning off check engine lights. I like the adapters that comes with it for the OBD1 vehicles, it's very handy. The only problem that i have with it is it doesn't come with some of the Manufactures adapters like Nissan , VW, or Honda. Oh, I also like the fact that you can hook it up to your computer and print off your findings! It's a perfect product for the Tech who wants something at home or the hobby guy who doesn't want to spend so much on a tool. I would buy this tool again if I had to.

Abilities limited
Received tool and read owner's manual(followed up with a call to tech support) to find that it does not read live sensor data on obdI applications as spec. leads to believe. Since I own two obd1 vehicles and two obd2 vehicles I returned tool for one that reads both.

Buy a OBDII --> USB Cable and datalog to a laptop

Unless you are tech-challenged I would definitely suggest using a cable that can be found for $50 or less online that allows the user to plug the OBDII straight into a computer's USB port. I'm not going to give a link because finding out about the different kind of cables and reading up on the subject is the best way to find information you will need once the computer is connected to the car. Datalogging (recording the data being sent to your car's ECU while the car is in operation) is just as important as retrieving the trouble codes that cause the Check Engine light to come on. The method I suggest is definitely more trouble than hooking up a handheld, but it's going to give alot more information and give the user a better idea of the condition/issues of the vehicle. The biggest downside is that once the cable is hooked up to the PC/laptop, you have to use specific software to record, playback, and decipher the data stream and codes, and typically the software does not cover a large range of years, models, and usually just 1 manufacturer. But believe me, if you truly want to understand the status of your vehicle it's worth the effort, and a lot less expensive. Spend the cash with Sears, just invest in a top notch floor jack & stands, some nice hand tools, or maybe even a compressor. You'll end up with more information/knowledge and then the equipment to do something with it.

Product description is misleading

The scanner provides snapshot pictures or recorded time frames of real time information. service and repair history is also an interesting feature. However, You need to pruchase a $40 cable to download to laptop. Nowhere in the product description or prepurchase covers are you informed that the Repair guide is a subscription fee of $14-15 per use. This is something that should be advertised prior to purchase. The only way to know is to remove from p[ackage, upload software and attempt to use this function, voiding the ability to return the product. Im not sure you couldnt do the same thing with a unit $100 cheaper. Im not willing to eat that too to find out. Hop[fully this unit will prove me wrong and actually pay for itself.

Great Tool with good features but slightly unsatisfied.

I already owned an cheaper Actron OBD2 reader, but when i saw this 1 on sale I couldn't pass it up. I was mostly interested in the fact it was both OBD1 and 2. According to the description and manual, it was "Internet Upgradable". I assumed by upgradable, that ment the latest software and I could upgrade it to do ABS as well for an additional $99. Thats what the website for CANOBD2 said (the fine print that listed model numbers NOT upgadable but those didnt match my model). NO IT IS NOT UPGRADABLE. Not only can you not add any upgrades, but when you click on the "upgrade" button in the program that came with the scanner for your computer, it says "THIS DEVICE NOT SUPPORTED". So no Firmware or software updates either. I called Tech Support listed on the last page of the book and found out that this unit does not have any upgrades or software support. All you can do is download the program that already comes on the disc in the box. So, about the program. Its okay. Clumbsy to use at first, but good for keeping records or if using for a customer or friend, it will list everything and you can add and enter any actions taken or problems found. Kind of neat, but BASIC. I would recommend this scanner to a friend, but ONLY if they KNOW what they want it for. I was wanting 1 I could pretty much do everything with (OBD1/2 ABS/SRS) and this wasnt the 1. If you want a better idea and description about the unit and its capabilties go to this page: http://www.canobd2.com/Products/Tools.aspx a little research discovered that the Craftsman 20899 was the 3140 but Sears slapped their brand name and logo on it. Nothing wrong with that, just tell everyone the full info about it or copy all the info from thier page so customers can see what it really is capable of and not of. 1 last thing. The serial port and lack of USB. I purchased a serial to USB adapter and it works just fine. Paid $7 for it from newegg. easy workaround. just remember to install the drivers for the serial/usb adapter. SO, good unit, nice case. Just didnt do everything I though.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
